Today marks the beginning of Black History Month.

The way this will work is that I will ask the first question about Black History. Whoever answers the current question must ask the next.

Questions:

Who was the first person of African descent to dine with a sitting U. S. president?

Who was the president?

How many other novels did Ellison publish before his death in 1994?

None?

That's correct. Ellison's second novel was destroyed when his house caught fire in 1967. In 1981, Ellison quipped : "If I'm going to be remembered as a novelist, I'd better produce a few more books."

Ellison died thirteen years later at the age of 80, never haven written a second book (although he produced many many short stories and essays).

After serving in the U. S. Army in France I went on to be the first black American to obtain a doctorate in mathematics in the United States, who am I?

Elbert Frank Cox, from Cornell, in 1925. It was actually the first one awarded to a black anywhere in the world (mathematics was not a PhD subject in many universities at the time).

What self-educated black man published his own Farmer's Alamanac circa 1795?

Yogurt is correct! Ellison did publish a couple of books of essays and John Callahan produced another novel, Juneteenth, which was culled from about 2000 pages of manuscript Ellison left behind. Sadly, Ellison never published another novel after the highly successful Invisible Man.

Amlord's questions is now active:

Keeping with the religious theme- what was the first year that the LDS church lifted the ban on blacks being baptized into the priesthhood?

The Church of Latter Day Saintís lifted the ban on ordaining (not baptizing) black priests in 1978. Yet it was nine years later that Jesse Lee Thomas became the first black Mormon priest.

New question:

1. Little Richard
2. Fats Domino
3. Chuck Berry
4. Pat Boone laugh.gif w00t.gif
5. Bo Diddley

I'm just guessing here - Fats Domino?

Here's another trivia question?

Nine months before Rosa Parks made history by refusing to give up her
seat to a white man, another African-American was arrested for refusing to
give up her seat to a white person. What was her name?
