In a somewhat quiet and understated move, the Government of China effectively ended one of the bastions of Communist rule in the country by enshrining in the Chinese constitution the right to private property.

Though it has been difficult to call China 'communist' in recent years with their market reforms, several of the primary pillars of the communiststate still existed. The absence of private property was probably the single most important, and had been identified by Mao himself as the hallmark of a communist state.

China may well be the first country in the world to successfuly transition between communist and capitalist (all the while maintaining their oligarchy, mind you) Further, the enshrining od private property will make the country even more attractive to foreign investment.

So the question of the day is, What is next for China? Will they be able to maintain their Oligarchy while moving over to a market economy state, and if they do, how long before they start to rival the US for superpower status?
