I think the Simpsons referenced this trepidation shown by politicians in the
Treehouse of Horror VII episode. For those of you not familiar with this, Kang is an alien that everyone thinks is presidential candidate Bob Dole.
QUOTE
Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen, 73-year-old candidate, Bob Dole.
Kang: Abortions for all.
[crowd boos]
Very well, no abortions for anyone.
[crowd boos]
Hmm... Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others.
[crowd cheers and waves miniature flags]
The unwillingness to speak about this is in some ways evidence of the corruption of our leaders. Too many are in it for the power and not the people. They waffle because it's easier than thinking about it and finding the words to explain ones self.
On the other hand, it comes and goes as a hot election issue. The people generally do not demand a firm answer from their candidates.
This is just my perception, but it seems as if abortion was really a back burner issue until Bush decided to make a speech at that anti-choice rally last weekend. I will be interested to see if it becomes something that will make or break one's vote in the 2004 election.
