Conservative Christians complain that the Secular Left is driving God from the public square. They claim they are being persecuted because of their religion.

The Secular Left doesn't see it that way. It's spokesmen say that the Conservative Christians are trying to make their religion the official religion of the U.S. They're intent on posting slogans (like the Ten Commandments) in every public place, of making children say their slogans (as when they pledge allegiance each morning).

Perhaps the effort (by the ACLU, et. al.) to get rid of these public slogans of official faith is not the best one. As they teach in martial arts, it's often best to allow your opponent to complete his move so you can use it against him.

So . . . how about this? It's a campaign to keep things level, and it goes like this: wherever there is a posting of some religious slogan on public property, it should be accompanied by a quote.

How about this quote from Thomas Jefferson:

QUOTE(Jefferson)
The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus by the Supreme Being in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.

And there it is, right alongside the Ten Commandments.

Whadayathink? Good idea?

Hey, I think we got room for another plaque, How 'bout this from Washington's Farewell Address?

QUOTE
Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity,
religion and morality are indispensable supports.  In vain would that man
claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great
pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and
citizens.  The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to
respect and to cherish them.  A volume could not trace all their
connections with private and public felicity.  Let it simply be asked,
Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense
of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of
investigation in courts of justice?  And let us with caution indulge the
supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may
be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar
structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national
morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

Nope! The idea is to neutralize the Official Slogan, not to promote it.
