At the invitation of BoF, here is a little information about myself, arranged something like a personal ad:

Single white female, 40, prissy yet irreverent midwestern type, Christian without the conservative, straight without the narrow. Employed as secretary to a Protestant religious official; have been a secretary for over twenty years in various industries and fields. Non-college-educated, but voracious reader and deep thinker. Proud slave of two beautiful felines: Thisbe the black-and-white Manx and Cushie the inscrutable black-pantheresque shorthair. Descended from British dynasty of slackers whose last real act of self-actualization was emigrating to the States. Likes: books, art, opera, intelligent repartee, libraries on rainy afternoons, and the feel of a cat's ears under my hand. Dislikes: soap operas, country music, hip-hop, contemporary pop culture being rammed down my throat, and separating Thisbe and Cushie when they try to kill each other. I don't smoke or drink or chew, but I'll still associate with those that do if they promise not to exhale in my face, spit on my shoelaces or make drunken advances they'll deny later. smile.gif

NOTE: Thisbe is named for the mythological figure whose doomed romance with her lover Pyramus was the basis for Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Cushie is named for Cushie Percy, the 'bad girl' in "The World According to Garp." If you've seen the film, Cushie's the little blonde hottie who rolls around with Garp in the bushes behind the hilariously-symbolic cannon. smile.gif

My screenname simultaneously highlights my lapsed Catholicism and commemorates Saint Vibiana, patron saint of single laywomen and the mentally ill ... and sometimes they're not too far apart. LOL

blush.gif It's not often that I issue invitations, and less often that they are accepted, so I'll be the first to respond.

I understand about soaps. My grandmother used to watch As the World Turns. Is that silly bit of non-sense still on TV? In the mid-50s, when the Brooklyn Dodgers usually got beat by the New York Yankees, Granny would get mad because Daddy insisted on watching baseball and she missed a whole week of her soap. sad.gif

I tend to agree about country music, especially the cookey cutter stuff currently coming out of Nashville. Yet I do like Bob Wills an Hank Williams and think they made a contribution to Americana.

Edited to add:

Don't forget Willie Nelson.

Welcome to the board. smile.gif

Two things --

I work with someone who watches All My Children every day. My lunchtime amusement is to do a Soap Opera Theater 3000 routine and make fun of the dialogue every chance I get. Naturally, she hates me. LOL

When I said I didn't like country, I forgot about Patsy Cline and k.d. lang ... I do like them. LOL

Thanks for the welcome!
