Darcaine - that is just rude. He was trying to be nice and respect the on topic rule. I appreciate that.

since our surveillance in Iraq is so good, why do we need to go to war at all? Why CAN'T we use this awesome technology to help the inspections, instead of as a prelude to massive war?

Saddam won't let us use our U-2's

None of this changes the facts:

Iraq is in violation of the UN's resolutions.

The UN has the choice of whether or not to enforce the resolution and how.

Powell's speech was just to re-iterate what the Security Council already knew, Iraq is in violation.

And yet again the UN proves it's worthlessness! The UN obviously don't wan to help us. That's fine, we don't really need them, but now liberals can't say we didn't try for diplomatic options. Anyway, let's just do it, we have Italy, Spain and the UK, that's enough.

I have not heard the Iraqi government specifically refute anything that Gen. Powell said, other than 'it's all lies'.

Anybody have info on that?

Being in defiance of the UN has rarely meant war for anyone. Israel has ignored far more UN demands than saddam.

Im not saying there is *no* case for war but this, 'hes defying the UN' is really hypocritical. If they are US allies we dont care.

RE: iraq violating UNSC resolutions-http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/1002resolutions.pdf and http://www.vicpeace.org/fact-sheets/FactSheet6vpn.pdf

Iraq hasn't said we can't use our U-2's they just said they couldn't garuntee they would be shot at (in 11 years of air piracy, the Iraqi air defenses have not been able to hit any of our manned aircraft. therefore, this is a stupid excuse not to us the u-2s, which only the USSR has been able to actually shoot down)

powells speech was based upon plagerized papers, grainy poor qaulity photos that could be ANYTHING, qeustionable audio tapes supposedly "intercepted" from Iraq, and a reliance on the gullibillty of people. he did not convince the people that needed to be convinced (the rest of the world) the bush administration can care less what the people think, and will go forward regardless of world or american opinion. you can't trust the media polls either saying the american people support the war, as polls can be and are rigged. and saddams neighbors are feelless threatened by him then bush.

The resolution calls for "unrestricted" flights, I think we can all agree, "we might shoot you" is a restriction, as restrictive as it gets actually.

Take into account the tons of chemical and biological weapons which remains unaccounted for and the fact that Iraq default state at this point is material breach (the Security Council has yet to lift that classification) and it is quite clear Iraq is in violation.

1. Since the US has such great surveillance abilities, and all this evidence about WMDs in Iraq, why has the US not been sharing this information with the inspectors, who could have not only helped to verify it, but could have actually found what they were looking for. If we were trying to avert war, wouldn't this have made sense?

Finally, since our surveillance in Iraq is so good, why do we need to go to war at all? Why CAN'T we use this awesome technology to help the inspections, instead of as a prelude to massive war?

As I understand the US Satellite surveillance abilities, we can't observe all of Iraq 24 hours a day 7 days a week or in real time. I believe this is why Iraq has a problem with the UN using the US U2 spy planes. With the U2 spy planes watching Iraq it would be much more difficult to move any prohibited material without being caught. I believe this is why the UN is pushing this issue.

True, our satellites make passes over areas under surveillance, and high definition/resolution pictures can only be made over a narrower surveillance path.

This seems does seem to be how we came by a lot of the intelligence that Gen. Powell showed in his presentation to the UN.

Signal Intelligence (Sigint) satellites, designed to intercept radio and mobile phone traffic have been used recently in conjunction with the Echelon phone, fax and e-mail monitoring system to gather the intel presented.
And yes, it does seem rather silly that Iraq says the UN can fly U-2's, but can't guarantee that they won't be shot down. Iraq probably does not posess the capability of doing so, but it's par for the course pertaining to their 'cooperation'.
