Eugene McCarthy lived a quiet final 30 years but in 1968 he changed the political climate. He inspired many disenchanted New Lefters to "Be Clean for Gene"
He is credited for LBJ's decision to get out of the race.
By the fall of 1968 with the Democratic Party in disarray, the assassinations of MLK and RFK and the re-disenchantment of the New Left with politics, the world became a surreal dark comedy and Eugene left the public scene instead of trying to fill in the gulf that he helped create and got pushed out of, he joined the counterculture in departing from the fray.
