Yeah, yeah, I know. This has been done to death. But this one is of some interest.

Moral Politics Test

Let me say in advance that the test itself is lousy. Even the "long" version is way too short, and is full of questions that are impossible to answer. I would suggest ignoring the test entirely.

However, the two-dimensional matrix which is used is very interesting. (Click on the various parts of the "Explain" menu to the left to get a detailed discussion.)

The two dimensions are "Moral Order" (the goal of your political philosophy) and "Moral Rules" (what method should be used to achieve this.)

Under "Moral Order," the two goals are "NonConformance" to the left and "Conformance" to the right. Under "Moral Rules," the two methods are "Independence" towards the bottom and "Interdependence" towards the top.

OK, let's see where I stand. Without even taking the test, I know that I am very far to the left and slightly lower than the middle. The "system" where I stand is "Liberalism" (in the broadest possible sense.) The "variation" where I stand is "Moral Liberalism":

QUOTE
People in this category will tend to have stronger opinions about loosening the moral order (gay rights, ecology, drug legalization,...) than about favoring individual initiatives (lower taxes, less corporate and environmental regulations, ...)

The "ideology" where I stand is "progressivism."

Things get interesting where I compare myself to various people, parties, and nations. (See the "Maps" section of the "Explain" menu.)

US Presidents: I'd be a little to the left of JFK.

US 2004 Elections: I'd be below Nader and to the left of Kerry.

US Parties: I'd be in the lower end of the Green Party; a "libertarian-leaning Green" rather than a "green-leaning Libertarian."

French Presidents and French Parties: Nowhere near anybody! This is very interesting, and may explain some of the conflicts between France and the USA. All American parties and presidents tend towards the bottom, and all French parties and presidents tend towards the top. The best I can say is that I am very far below Mitterrand and very far below the Verts, although I am more-or-less the same on the other dimension.

UK Parties: I'd be on the left side of the Liberal Democrats.

G8 Countries: Not very close to anybody. The best match would be the UK, but I am far to the left of them.

Religions: I'm not sure how meaningful this section of the Maps might be. For whatever it might be worth, I'd be on the far left side of Judaism.

So where would you place yourself?

I could not really do the test as many of the questions did not have an option that I could really agree with, so I am just going to label myself a winner anyways.

Overall, these tests can be fun, I just wish how I thought about things was maybe more prominent so I could share such with the community in the form of a result from the test, not lack of one as a result because the test resulted with me having little to nothing in common with the options.

Heh, that was funny.

The questions come across as valid, but the limited answers pushed me over to socialism. Whatever, garbage in, garbage out.

Obviously prejudiced against any collective effort, the test lumps it all into socialism. Yep, and that's how we put a man on the Moon, built the Interstate Highway System, and support the most powerful military in the world.

Methinks something stinks.

I am bit confused, I turn out to be much more to the right than I thought. The Democratic Party matches best with my score, but in daily life I am definately not a supporter of this party. huh.gif I always thought of myself as being a realistic and pragmatic liberal socialist, not a moderate liberal. And certainly not an U.S. styled moderate liberal.

It's funny you regard yourself more like a liberal and turned out to be a socialist, for me it is the reverse. hmmm.gif
Julian
I got -2.5 and +1, which makes puts me in about the right place for where I am in the UK - to the left of the Labour Party.

It also confirmed that I wouldn't really fit anywhere in the US political mainstream, mainly on the moral rules scale, where almost everyone seems to think that collective (e.g. government) action has much less value than I place on it.

I found it interesting that on the countries map, I would fit in best in Italy. Maybe I'll pencil it in as my next holiday destination. biggrin.gif

How many of you all are surprised!!! smile.gif I imagine that many of you all. The funny thing is that I'm probably far more capitalist than "contemporary conservative" on most matters. I'm not surprised at all that I fell closest to Reagan (as I'm sure many of you are not either).

It's funny, because I felt like some of the answers I'd fall somewhere in the middle, so maybe a longer (more conclusive test) might be in order...

That's about where I thought I'd be. I agree that the questions were a bit limiting, but I think the whole idea is to present a forced choice to see where you fit in the current set of ideologies. If you don't really fit into those categories to begin with -- or if you don't agree with the definitions -- then you're going to have problems with the test.

Ed to add: There're also some links to the parties of other countries and the presumed zeitgeist of the G8 nations. For example, according to the Matrix, I most agree with Canada's grey eminence.

I don't know about your results PE. I don't know about mine either. After looking at the website and seeing that "libertarian capitalism" [which screams 'CP!' to me] is a tiny sliver on the lower left hand corner of the map. It's almost impossible to land in it...Meanwhile the two major parties have huge areas...As I said, I wouldn't put too much stock in the results.

Quite interesting. Both ConservPat and I, declared conservative libertarians wound up in Republican territory, a long ways away from the libertarian camp. I wonder if the test is a little mistaken on where libertarians fit in.

I think, at least in my case, the discrepancy is this: I interpreted the questions to be asking "How should things be in a perfect world?" The test then interpreted them to mean "Government should make it so." In many cases, that isn't true. Things like alternate lifestyles and drug use I strongly disapprove of, but at the same time don't think it's the place of the government to step in and strictly legislate them. I think that's what pushed my results to the east.

This test thinks that my ideology is authoritarian. Although I would disagree about what authoritarian might mean. For starters, I think people should help one another and encourage "traditional" lifestyles, but not necessarily have those things mandated by the Government.
