The New Year is here and people across the nation are making resolutions to stop smoking, exercise more, put away more money in savings etc. etc. Well, they say you're something like 80% more likely to achieve a goal if you write it down so....

What is your new year's resolution?

I know it's lame and cliche but my resolution is to eat healthier. Not really a diet per se, but cut out (or cut back on) the pop/soda products, increase the amount of servings of fruits and vegetables, and shun the fast food. I also plan on sticking to my training programs a lot closer this year. This year is when I'm going to get my base miles (lots of long, slow workouts) to build up for Ironman Wisconsin in 2007. I also resolve to "cat up" my cycling racing category which means I need to be looking for a few more top 5 spots this year.

I decided to make these resolutions because I'm fresh out of college and have entered kicking and screaming into corporate America. For those of you lucky enough to not have a corporate job, I must inform you that their is some dark, soul sucking, life draining force in the world that only exists when you sit in a cubicle which drains you of all your energy and motivation. This force has kept me from training after work for too long and killed any motivation to do something that would add balance to my life. That, coupled with the fact that I still try and party like I'm still in college and my co-workers like to go out to eat all the time (to get away from the evil force), isn't helping shave off any time off the run either.

So I'm turning a new leaf! It's time to get back in the game, drop off those extra college pounds, revamp the training program, and come spring, put a hurtin' on the competition! "The pain train is comin' baby..."

Most years I resolve not to make resolutions, but things have worked out to where it's appropriate right now.

The primary goal is to finish a fiction piece I've been working on for two years. The plot's done, the characters developed, the conflicts identified and the ending determined. Two chapters on my sixth attempt at writing this thing are roughed out, so now it is a matter of discipline to rough out the others, do the rewriting, find a decent agent and get a best-seller published.

The secondary goal is to make a pile of money in 2006. I am very tired of being broke all the time, even though I have the support of a fine woman. It is not in me to simply live off of her kindness and loyalty. Tech jobs aren't materializing, so it looks like I'm stuck with writing.

A third goal is to start gigging again around town. That will be my hobby and my way to interact with folks, get ideas for other stories, write another best-seller, make another pile of money and repeat. Have to get the first two goals before going after this one.

Ultimately, I want to be so filthy rich that I can start a foundation of some sort, a non-profit to help out. Not sure what this would be focused on. There is no lack of possibilities, is there. I know what it won't be though.

No fake charity for tax shelters, no bloated administration, no government involvement, probably nothing to do with writing or making music. I think writing and musicianship are curses, karmic results from prior lifetimes. Gotta pay the dues, eh?

try adding a day filled with customers so inept and mind numbingly incompetent--i do tech support.

I gave up smoking 3 years ago on new years. This year I am giving up smoking and white flour.

I need to take off some extra weight to even have a shot at keeping up with my kids--who get even better looking every day. thumbsup.gif

Finally get enough freelance design work to leave the cubicles forever.
