Tulsa Pastor Arrested In OKC On Lewdness Charge

QUOTE
OKLAHOMA CITY -- An executive committee member of the Southern Baptist Convention was arrested on a lewdness charge for propositioning a plainclothes policeman outside a hotel, police said.

Lonnie Latham, senior pastor at South Tulsa Baptist Church, was booked into Oklahoma County Jail Tuesday night on a misdemeanor charge of offering to engage in an act of lewdness, police Capt. Jeffrey Becker said. Latham was released on $500 bail Wednesday afternoon.

Latham, who has spoken out against homosexuality, asked the officer to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. Latham was arrested and his 2005 Mercedes automobile was impounded, Becker said.

The arrest took place in the parking lot of the Habana Inn, which is in an area where the public has complained about male prostitutes flagging down cars, Becker said. The plainclothes officers was investigating these complaints.

Latham is one of four Southern Baptist Convention executive committee members from Oklahoma.

He has also spoken out against same-sex marriage and in support of a Southern Baptist Convention directive urging its 42,000 churches to befriend gays and lesbians and try to convince them that they can become heterosexual "if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior and reject their 'sinful, destructive lifestyle."'

What I find funny with this example and that republican congressman from Washington state a couple months ago is these and others are the same people preaching to others about being gay and trying to convert people of their sins. As well as being outspoken against same-sex marriage bills completely. whistling.gif

Questions:

1. Why can't people learn to look into their own closets before preaching to others about what might be in theres?

2. Is this just another example of hypocrisy runamuck?

3. While this hurt the religious institutions again?

1. Why can't people learn to look into their own closets before preaching to others about what might be in theres?

Boy, that's the $100,000 question, isn't it? I wish I knew what character defect makes some people so self-righteous that they feel they can tell others how to live their lives while their own closets are bulging with "sins".

2. Is this just another example of hypocrisy runamuck?

Yep. And it's nothing new. The evangelists' meltdown (80's?) comes to mind. I also found this:

There must be something about a conference that drives those religious men wild. rolleyes.gif
3. While this hurt the religious institutions again?

Heck, if the past is anything to go by, not a chance. Unfortunately, they'll sob on TV and beg their congregations for forgiveness, and all will be forgiven and forgotten...until the next time.

1. Why can't people learn to look into their own closets before preaching to others about what might be in theirs?

Do as I say, not as I do. Doctors smoke, dieticians eat big macs, and I bet there's some literary critics that love trashy romance novels; the point is we're all hypocrites at one point or another. But the difference here is that the ideas these people are preaching have huge impacts on peoples lives and if they can't stand up for how they truly feel then they're living a lie and possibly hurting others as well.

2. Is this just another example of hypocrisy run amuck?

Yeah, I guess. Anti-gay preachers soliciting sex from a male? Put it in Webster's with his name next to hypocrisy.

3. Will this hurt the religious institutions again?

For some yes, for others no. If you didn't hold much stock in current religious institutions then this probably wont affect you. Also, if you're able to rationalize it then it wont affect you. The only people changed will be those who feel betrayed.
