First of all, I hope all of you know the first amenment...I really hate what he said "Chocolate City" but that is not going to change what he says or feels...the same as the music lyrics. Racism is a big issue in America and it has been since...well, forever. The whole world has a problem with it... ever since humans first evolved (or whatever else) to this planet. Now maybe pulling in religon(how sad i don't know how to spell it, or if i spelled it right?) is pretty wrong but, free speech. innocent.gif

Is Mayor Nagin helping to widen the divide between Whites and Blacks within New Orleans with his comments?

He is by making whites feel unwelcomed, by saying it isn't any other way then whites will not want to come. I surely don't want to come to a city that is known as a "black" city just like no town should be called a "white" city. By saying things like this, Mayor Nagin is keeping Apartheid ideals alive, though it has become reverse-discrimination.

The double standards by liberals needs to stop. If the same comment were made by a white man they would be named a racist bigot. That is such crap. I in no way think that mayor nagin is a racist. I think that he used the wrong words to describe himself therefore making himself come across like white people are not welcome to his city. People in this country need to be a little more understanding and not be so political. When a Leader in a certain party says something the other party jumps all over it and tries to make the person out to be evil. IT causes such a divide and hate in our own country.

It is a double standard, you have that right, but public outcry is labelled as racism.

After the hurricane Katrina, I wouldnt think that the divide between whites and blacks are very important.

Mayor Nangin's comments were of course inappropriate but in no way did they help widen the divide between white and blacks, nor have his past statements. New Orleans is a city where the wealth is unevenly distributed between the minority white population and the majority black population. Divisions between the two races in New Orleans have been and are still being influenced by this inequality of wealth. The effect that these statements have on black and white relations is miniscule if not non-existent, due to the harshness of the existing reality.

I think Nagins chocolate city comments are much to do about nothing. I feel bad for Nagin, during Katrina he was in over his head. Now he will be in the national public eye for the rest of his political career. Sure I would not vote for him, nor do I think he is a great mayor, but his Chocolate City comments are awlfully mild and nothing in comparison to the statements Cynthia Mckinney said about Military Recruiters and Katrina Victims. If there is anyone who needs to be accused of Racial divides over New Orleans it would be the Georgia Congress woman.
