I was just wondering if anyone had certain issues they avoid because they have such a strong stand?

Mine is Abortion -- I won't even read the threads. My mind's made up and I'm not going to talk to anyone about it.

I'm not asking this to debate the issues. Just wondering if there are any issues that people have strong opinions about but they choose not to discuss them.

Certainly.

In my case, I can be very opinionated to a degree which is anti-communicative. No sense posting in such a manner which negates the ability to debate.

Other times, I do have an opinion but consider the topic to be trivial in respect to other topics so do not bother.

I like the topics which get to core thought processes the best.

Abortion is one of those issues which is not very debatable. You just can state your opinion and move on.

I have the same issues. I've been turned off of religious chatter after several attempts at discussion. Mostly I'm not as active as I'd like to be due to time if you're not in here often you end up reading 2 pages of replies and personally I feel left out if I get into a thread too late like its pointless to start now...but that's just me...

I fell this way about communist anarchism. people tend to not be willing to even give new things a chance, and just say it will never work. I have noticed in these kinds of situations, people forget history real quick if it doesn't fit their truth, (such as saying that the US hasn't destroyed any socialist/communist country from developing, or call all communist leaders "dictators" some were of course)

This is probably the core of why I don't participate. It really doesn't allow for discussion.

I can see your point since I am actively participating in a subject that many would consider trivial in respect to other topics.

unabomber --

I was raised Catholic so I know the arguments. I can't imagine that anyone has come up with anything new to say about this in the past twenty years.

I think your comments are accurate for the Communist issue because society has been imprinted with a certain belief about it on a grand scale. I've actually been interested in tossing a few questions to the communist threads -- I do have a few! I'll get to it eventually.

No, no subject keeps me from writing an opinion--but maybe my opinion is irrelevant, already stated, or just plain stupid due to lack of experience.

Another thing that keeps my trap shut in regular life is when folks are trying to work something out, and I'd sound like a preaching old fart. Overindulgence in alcohol tends to release this control, and so I don't imbibe in public. Or much at all any longer. There were nights though . . . many moons ago.

Sometimes I can get angry with other people's opinions or the actions of our leaders, both in politics and business. This passes and can degrade into depression. That's a situation that needs special attention! Comedy, music, getting out and about, maybe helping out someone, writing something--that all helps.

I have to bite my tongue quite often.

Jaime and I (and now the staff) tend to set the tone of the forum (more her than me lately), so if we get overly passionate, we can portray the wrong image for our site.

As for issues I avoid, there are some. I'm not religious, so that's out. I'm not about to post in Democrat Debate out of fear I would be torn apart in there. (thanks Democrats! smile.gif )

Other than that, I'm pretty much game for just about any topic...

Hmmnnn..... so Democrat Debate is a safe haven... shifty.gif

I'm afraid I can't keep my trap shut about much of anything. I like reading posts in forums where I'm fairly ignorant of the topic - it sometimes inspires me to research something to which I might otherwise never have given much thought. I do try to read entire threads before posting to them, though, and try not to reiterate points which someone else has already made - unless I have something signifcant to add (apart from my endorsement biggrin.gif ). So there are some topics which I avoid simply because the amount that's been posted to them already is just too daunting (like the Creationism threads). Otherwise, just about any thread is at risk...
