I will agree with most people that Bush's budget spends way too much, (but I'm all for the tax cuts.) What I don't understand is why these politicians cannot stop spending. It's like they are crack addicts and need to put in to rehab. Case in point...Last year in my state we had a battle over an income tax because the governor was crying about budget short falls. A lot of people rallied against it and it did not pass, but they did pass the biggest sales tax increase in the state's history, 1 billion dollars to be exact. Now we have a new governor, who is planning to cut all state dept's because of a shortfall, which is what he needs to do, but here are my beefs (with the previous administration.) They passed a 1 billion dollar tax increase last year, this January's tax revenues were up over 16% more than last year, but according to the governor, there is still a 600 million dollar shortfall in the budget. Now if inflation is running at 2%, and tax revenues were up over 16%, that means the governor would have had to increase the budget by over 18%, in the middle of a recession!! I guess my question to the forum is:

What do we have to do to bring these people back to reality, and more importantly, is it possible? We had thousands of people demonstrating around legislative plaza against a tax increase, but they still passed one anyway. We will keep trying though.

Government spends. That's their self-assigned duty.

Lord knows they're no good at writing law.

This applies at every level of government.

Here in Savannah, they passed a tax called S.P.L.O.S.T..

It is the "Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax".

The problem is that they have not yet decided for what they will use the SPLOST fund.

Taxation without representation? Nope. More like taxation without destination.

I hate taxes.

I agree, if you live in GA, you must have heard of Boortz. He is nutty, but I tend to agree with some of what he says.

Boortz is my radio hero!!

On his website today under 'NealsNuze' he talks about the Presidents Council of Economic Advisors recommendation on overhauling our current tax structure. Found it quite interesting, but I haven't yet found an independent link to the report.

I think we need Ross Perot back on the national scene.

I was reading an article in the Wasington Post about government spending. $1.92 trillion in total receipts and $2.23 trillion to total spending. I'm sure the government realizes this, but they don't care. We're only borrowing from future generations. We rely on deficit spending.

Bush spends way to much money. He realizes it. But frankly, he just doesn't care.

I believe career politicians spend like mad because they can. They will not lose votes for doing so. Do you want to bring them back to reality? It will take many people not voting for them.
