Well, Christopher called me out I guess, Thanks Chris, I think. LOL

I finally got a chance to listen this show on Sunday 7/23. Wednesday Afternoon a heck of a Storm hit the St. Louis Area doing some heavy damage around the area. Thankfully, my friends, family and neighbors got though it without injury or major damage. However, we did loose electrical power in my neighborhood from Wednesday evening until Saturday afternoon. To add insult to injury, we were in the middle of a 3 digit heat wave at the time. So, many of us lost a few pounds, lost the contents of our freezers, and some of use nearly needed professional help due to the lack of TV / Internet / etc in their lives for several days. wacko.gif

So, as an answer to Christopher, I am back here, in a way. I have little interest is debating national and international issues at this point. I am way to tied up with my local government issues. So much so that I started a web forum to discuss the issues facing us on the local, county and state level (when it comes to national and international issues I redirect people to America's Debate). I was expecting a slow start, so gaining 25 members in the first week or so with no advertising (and no loading the books with friends) was something of a surprise. Hopefully, as I attend City Council, County Council, and School Board Meetings (as well as regular meetings of several local organizations) the site will grow into something akin to America's Debate for local issues facing my area. Of course, I have gotten on the "wrong side" of politics on the local level before, and suffered as a result. I am hoping that this time around I will not find myself with tickets for dirty license plates, and constant warnings from the codes enforcement folks in my mailbox. If you want to check out how it is going, feel free to visit: Overland Speaks Out! or OverlandSailor's Blog (new).

In my experience, the city level of government has the greatest power to screw up our daily lives. With that in mind I have become more and more involved in local government issues and I am actively working on promoting involvement in my community. If people are not paying attention, the local government officials can (and do) get away with nearly anything. It is our job to keep up with what is going on and exercise our own checks and balances at the ballot box.

When it comes to my small efforts, I seem to be regularly aggravating people on both sides of the political aisle around here so I feel I am effectively doing my job. rolleyes.gif

One last thing, this one's for Mike. You mentioned on the show that we would have a very different country if everyone voted, rather the concerned / interested / etc. voters who currently participate in the electorial process. Well, Mike, that might be true, but I don't think it would be worse. It is the current pack of concerned and interested voters that gave us the government we have now. That, IMHO is not a ringing endorsement for limiting voting to those folks. cool.gif
