Jobius
I've been here close to a year now, thought I should introduce myself. I'm 36, single, a resident of San Francisco for the past nine years. I grew up in a liberal Democratic family, the second son of a former Catholic priest and nun. I've always been a skeptic; neither the religion nor the politics really stuck.

I was a registered Libertarian for a few years, but they lost me after 9/11. I couldn't in good conscience vote for a party that was so allergic to the concept of national foreign policy that it opposed military action against Afghanistan's Taliban regime.

I may not be a liberal Democrat, but I do believe in liberal democracy. I think the United States should support liberal, democratic reformers throughout the world. The biggest problem with American liberals (and Libertarians) today is that they don't recognize the profoundly illiberal nature of our enemies, as liberal author Sam Harris recently pointed out:

QUOTE
Given the degree to which religious ideas are still sheltered from criticism in every society, it is actually possible for a person to have the economic and intellectual resources to build a nuclear bomb — and to believe that he will get 72 virgins in paradise. And yet, despite abundant evidence to the contrary, liberals continue to imagine that Muslim terrorism springs from economic despair, lack of education and American militarism.

Hence my current signature, a play on Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign-bus reminder: It's the jihadis, stupid!

Thanks for the introduction.

I understand what you are saying, but I also believe that many liberals are quite aware that Islamic fundamentalism is the very antithesis of liberalism in all ways.

Welcome!

Hi Jobius. Thanks for the intro! smile.gif

I like your new sig, and I liked the old one, too....Something like 'People say the pen is mightier than the sword, but I would rather be killed by a sword than a pen. Being killed by a pen would probably take an awfully long time and hurt a lot!'

Or somesuch. tongue.gif I love your style of humor. flowers.gif

Thanks, Mrs. P. I liked the old one, too, and I might go back to it. My last few posts have been in the "Radical Islam" thread, and when I read my responses, the tagline at the end makes it sound like I'm calling people "stupid," which isn't my intention. The old sig, btw, was:

Jesus said, He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword.
And somebody said, The pen is mightier than the sword.
I'd rather live by the pen, and die by the sword.
Because I bet it would be real painful to be killed by a pen.

I was aiming for Jack Handey style with that one. Readers can judge for themselves if I was in the ballpark. smile.gif
