The terrorists threatening air travel rely on stealth, creativity, and individual initiative. They face security systems that operate in the open, by the book, and under bureaucratic control. That mismatch puts our safety at risk. The volunteer efforts of Nathaniel Heatwole, a 20 year-old who recently tested airline security and gave it an "F" in keeping box-cutters off of planes, hints at a cure: flying, for-profit, white-hat terrorism.

White Hat Terrorism
I don't like the idea of letting people at random do this, even with the penalty of having to pay the person who catches you, I think it would lead to far too many opportunities for creating havoc. Yet by increasing the stake of those who do these jobs I think it would lead to better performance and actually increase our safety.

To keep the attention of those who do many of these jobs engaged fully, would cash bonuses lead to better attention to detail and better performance?

Would offering cash incentives for detecting security violations lead to better enforcement and make us safer?

Which of these security areas would this be a good idea to apply the bonus idea to: airport security, port security, border patrol, customs.

Perhaps. But lets remember the system is tested now (results classified) and you would hope that this would engender improvements. The problem with ‘white Hat” as I see it is the results may not be classified as easily and this could lead to the bad guys learning too much about our vulnerabilities.

I doubt it and in any case once the government took over it will never happen. In fact we should remember that not a single hijacker got on a plane because of the failure of a screener. Box cutters were ok at the time. And by the way it would take a lot more than box cutters to get a plane now. Now our biggest threat is that the plane gets shot down by a shoulder fired missile. There is a program to deal with this but like all government programs it is moving too slowly. Currently airliners have NO defence against shoulder fired missiles.

IMO the border patrol would benefit most but ONLY after we have a way to get the illegal aliens out of the country. Currently we stop them, they are then released and told to report back for a hearing (and deportation) . I will let you guess how many report back.
