Nobel-winning economist Milton Friedman has died
QUOTE

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman has died at the age of 94, according to media reports Thursday. Friedman, one of the most influential economists of the past century, died last night, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site, citing an official at the Cato Institute in Washington. Friedman was a professor at the University of Chicago from 1946 until 1976. He was awarded the Nobel in 1976.

Its a sad day for admirers of Mr. Friedman like myself. His influence on economics and the 20th century have still yet to be seen but they are certainly one of the most important contributions of the era.

Some important works by Friedman:

Capitalism and Freedom
Free to Choose
Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960

People as influential as Friedman do not come along very often and while his views on certain issues may have been controversial, they have always had the fervor of liberty behind them. RIP Milton Friedman.

Indeed, the man was a giant in the field of economics.

Rest in peace, Professor.

I did not agree with everything mr. Friedman wrote (not everything anyone wrote for the most part) but I was always facinated by his works and felt a kinship of sorts when it came to many of his core ideals.

Very true. What is interesting to me is how there just don't seem to be many powerful thinkers like this in our younger generations. That is not to say those that came after men like him are not capable, but perhaps they are not interested. Perhaps with the loss of Milton Friedman, some new voices will come into prominance.

Milton Friedman leaves a void for many. It will be interesting to see who might step up to fill it and what they might have to say. However, one thing is certain......Milton Friedman's influance will live on as his works will remain with us and suspect they will continue to influance many of us long into the next century.

He was brilliant- no doubt about it, and he was the first to really challenge Kenysian (sp) economics, and he also came up with the models for "stagflation"- a true genius- his life seems amazing to me- he met and married another economist, and he credits her intellect with pushing his ideas upon himself, and telling him when ideas were "stupid" instead of just being a yes ma'am.

He should be remembered for both his greatness, intellect, and ability to communicate with us of lesser intellect that perhaps couldn't comprehend his math!

I think he is also really the father of modern economic libertarianism, and though I disagree with some of his ideas as too utopian, too heavily reliant on personal responsibility of intelligent and informed societies in some of his ideals, I find myself much more in agreement than in disagreement with his writings.

I consider Noam Chomsky and Milton Friedman as the greatest minds of the 20th century, ahead of even Einstien and Hawking.

He was a great man, and should be remembered as such, RIP Milton Friedman
