Wertz just opened a 'Current Cinema' thread, but, I mostly don't do current, I'm always scanning the shelves in the video store for off-beat and not regular interest films, also Netflix, cinema is my biggest vice.

I am hoping those of us who like 'other than' might share recommendations.

I like all genres, and that includes gay and lesbian so youll see it in my recs. I like films with messages, things to say, humanity based, and I like beautiful filming but it doesnt have to be so. Sometimes plays set to movie format like 'Manderlay' which was hard to get used to but both that and the previous, I forget the title were interesting. Also films about courage in the face of diversity, and great horror would be a nice exploration. Love the Trainspotting, the Usual Suspects, Snatch type english stuff. Loved Ed Devine and Babettes Feast. Oscar Wilde and Faulkner set to film seem to do well.
I have a block when it comes to great old films, so Id love to know about the greats, but some of course Ive seen, Bette Davis, Joan Collins, Hitchcock, Fellini, Elias Kazan.

Forgive if some of these may be off the shelves in big cities, Ive lived in small , isolated towns for the last years, but I am giving it a shot.

Recent reccomendations, probably found now in video store:

Edmond: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443496/ William H. Macy, Julia Styles
William Macy does a great job as an 'unusual' character actor and almost makes films by his presence, like
'The Cooler'. This is similar and takes you on a journey that is not circular and doesnt wrap up tightly.
Jailbait http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/movie.html?v_id=305817 This one is just psychological, a play on film. Intense from start to finish.

Trilogy: by Deepa Mehta -Indian, all are great, situational India, womens issues oriented but by no means exclusionary.

Sophie Scholl, Last Days - about the female member of White Rose, who was put to death for opposing the Nazi regime and Hitler by writing and distributing leaflets. Her last 6 days.

Sorry Haters! -Crazy film about terrorism from a different point of view, downright suprising in its take, engaging all the way through. Nice indie type. Leaves you kind of like, wow, Unsettled.

The Big Animal- Black and white Chezc. or Polish about a man and wife who adopt a camel the circus leaves behind and how the village reacts to his newfound friend and peace of mind.

'Im the one that I want' - Margaret Cho- I think only on Netflix, stand up. Great!
Eddie Izzard- Dressed to Kill- From an 'executive transvestite', indie actor and cult phoenomena comes some of the most intelligent stand up EVER seen. I own 2 dvds from him and have rented two more from netflix to see, a Must See, cannot miss.

Tsotsi- In the spirit of City of God which was fantastic, this one is worth the rental fee.

The day I became a woman- Iran- netflix engaging tale of three stories, beautiful filming in indie style..
Maya- India-netflix-JawDropping. This is only for the strong of mind. True story of Indias (past in this case) bad treatment of girls, beautifully fimed, leading......... Womens or enlightened mens movie only, IMO. You will need to talk about this one when its over or be stunned into silence.
Seducing Dr Lewis- Canada-, netflix- fun foreign , in the spirit of Waking Ed Devine.
Michael Collins- for the rebel in us, the beginnings of the IRA, Liam Neeson draws you in and keeps you there for a long film, I think a good telling.

There is ONE film in horror that I think stands out amongst all Ive ever seen and that is: May
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/
Its not recent but for anyone who hasnt seen it, horror fan or not, its great filmaking.

Thats all for now.

Love May. The same director's The Woods with Patricia Clarkson and Bruce Campbell or Sick Girl, Also starring Angela Bettis from May are highly recommended.

It's not recent, but my all time favorite all time movie is Wild Zero, a sweet little love story about Japanese punk rockers, zombies and gender confusion.
Running on Karma: Defrocked shaolin monk turned stripper Andy Lao can see people's past lives. It's very fun.
Spectres of the Spectrum: Video collage/ultra low budget sci-fi flick weaves fact and fiction.

Two beautiful films from Thailand:
Last Life in the Universe stars Tadanobu Asano as a Japanese man living in Thailand.
Beautiful Boxer is a true story of a transgendered kickboxer. Lead actor Asanee Suwan, given the role for his martial arts skills, turns in an amazing performance.

A friend of mine runs a b-movie website I've contributed to, if linking to it is OK.

I'm going to second the plug for Deepa Mehta's three elements trilogy. She's a brilliant director, and she's faced a lot of controversy to get this work out there. It's beautiful, sad, and important.

I also loved Guitar Wolf's Wild Zero. That is a wonderfully fun film. smile.gif

A couple of recommendations:

Tuvalu - This is a German film that will likely appeal to those who appreciate the work of Jeunet and Caro. He (Veit Helmer) has a short film called Surprise that will give you an indication of his style. It's very whimsical stuff.

In the horror genre, I recommend El Espinazo del Diablo (The Devil's Backbone) directed by Guillermo Del Toro. This is a ghost story that takes place in a Spanish orphanage with the political backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. It's highly atmospheric.

I like weird films from Japan so I'm going to recommend 'Tetsuo', and 'Tetsuo 2, the Body Hammer'

Just a few random suggestions.

On the "arty" side, I might suggest The Exterminating Angel, which contains enough strange elements to be listed as one of Stephen King's favorite horror films.

On the "underground" side, I might suggest Forbidden Zone, which is 100% weirdness.
