My boyfriend and I have this thing going on about how the toilet paper should be put on the roller.
I put it on so it goes over the top. He insists get goes under the roller.
He changes it every time I do this.
I have put it under the roller and it has rolled off till almost nothing is left.
We were on vacation last month and every place we stayed put it over the top of the roller.
I know this is not a life threatening issue, just a pet peeve of mine and his.
So my question is... Is there a right way or wrong way to put it on the roller?
I should be glad at least someone besides me even replaces it.

You are correct, Mom! I think I remember the Book of Statistics showed that the single most dominant trait that wealthy people had was putting the toilet paper over the top (something like 95% of them did so).
I would also think that the 'right way' is the way your girlfriend wants it.
I'm curious...what's this peculiar fascination he has with being on the bottom?

I don’t even put it on the roller. I find it easier that way to use it and of course replacement is a snap.
I really don’t know how to make this post any longer, save putting the role on the roller provides some actions that really are not needed.

Man- you know, that has to be one thing I have never, in my entire life, contemplated, ever.
So- Like when someone says "hey- are you a Glass half empty person, or a glass half full person"
I say "Someone used the wrong sized glass"
So to this I say "Someone has too clean a house to be thinkin' if the toilet paper should be up or down"
SOMEONE doesn't have toddlers living in thier house, apparently!

There's this Texas saying, "what
Mom says, goes". The boyfriend should know better than to irk you over this-- he needs to lighten up. Real men don't care which way the toilet paper goes so long as the little woman is happy.

Definitely, over the top. As a child, my family vacationed in a rustic cottage in Donegal, Ireland. By "rustic" I mean; no electricity; no running water; no toilet. There was a shed at the top of a field used by six cottages. A horizontal plank of wood had a hole cut out and a bucket below. The shed was full of bugs. I would shine my flashlight at the roll of toilet paper, most of which is hidden from view. There were sometimes bugs taking a nap on the other side. If the roll was "over the top", one could see the bugs on the paper as the "dark-side" was pulled into view, and brush them off. If the paper had been rolled from below, I guess that the bugs would be discovered (hopefully) later and by different means.

Toilet paper! You people use toilet paper?
In my house we use 60 grit sandpaper. Until it's smooth!
One time I had a belt sander installed next to ...

Over the top.

It goes under the roller. It's neater that way. It's a conservative thing, I think.
Lefties just leave the old one on the roller and wait for someone else to change it. Or, they put the half empty roll on the floor or on the back of the tank. Or there are several years of "The Nation" kept handily nearby in case of an emergency.....

I second and carry your man law- Man law approved!
Oh- and I checked- we still have our TP off the roll, out of reach of my very creative 3 year old son. He doesn't stuff the toilet like my nephew liked to do at the same age- instead, he takes it all to his room and decorates the room with it.

So, what happens if the paper is not on a roller but sitting on its end in the window sill?
...and what if your a Roman and whilst sitting on your public (as in out in the open plaza) your faced with a sponge on a stick in a bucket of vinegar?

If the paper hangs down the back of the roll (under the roller) and there's condensation from a shower or bath, the toilet paper can stick to the wall or the dispenser. If it hangs down the front, there's no danger of this happening. That's the only deciding factor I can come up with. Pragmatically, your way makes more sense,
mom.

This question once came up an
All In The Family episode.
Meathead had put the TP on the spool going under and
Archie argued that it went over the top.

Oh, and BTW, Archie pronounced it "terlet" paper.

Over the top. Let the free end dangle freely. Mainly for the condensation reasons Wertz mentioned.
Plus, if the bog roll holder is mounted above any kind of textured wallpaper, the regular scraping of knuckles across it will remove said texture (and quite possibly some knuckle skin - mine is pine panelling, so if I have the free end against the wall I run the risk of splinters!) in short order if the free end is tucked away at the back, especially if there's any dampness from condensation, etc.
Though these only exist when you're talking about a "bathroom" which contains a toilet. If they are separate, the likelihood of condensation is lower, and so preferences for tidiness, such as lordhelmet's, can sensibly come into play (if the wall is tiled or otherwise smooth).

I like it over the top myself, mainly because when you go under it dangles and inevitably our cats see that as a new toy. My wife used to hang it under, but I thankfully broke her of that habit quickly, though the cat helped by destroying the last roll we had one time when she hung it under.

I'm an over the top person, though my mom always put it on the roll so it came from under. I think I changed for the same reason
WNEC Law 2008 does - not so easy for the kitties to have a ball dragging it all over the house.

Are you an engineer, CR?

Reason I ask, a friend at work sent me an email today called "Understanding Engineers" and one of them was:

To the optimist, the glass is half-full.
To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty.
To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

The paper should go over the roll--because I said so.
I think it looks better, doesn't hang down, and is more accessible. Not to mention, Mom says so...

Is there a right way or wrong way to put it on the roller?Of course it must be put OVER. Anyone who puts it under is truly wacko.

In fact,
I would go so far as to say INSANE. Yet, I'm sure there are people in the world who do that.

Is ther NOTHING more important that could be discussed?
IT'S PAPER WITH WHICH YOU CLEAN YOUR RECTUM... who cares how it looks on the roll..... it is strictly a utlity object and as such asthetic concerns are pointless....

Blasphemous! Toilet paper decorum is of the utmost importance for the form and function of any free society. I suggest you exercise *cough* due restraint here.
I hang the roll over. It's easier to grab that way when I'm in the dark in the middle of the night and can't see it.

What happened to the Sears Catalog? I thought we were all still using that for our needs! For anyone out there who has upgraded to the tissue roll, it needs to be over, so that it doesn't unroll at will!

GuardianAngel, I'm confused. If this thread is completely unimportant, then why did you "waste" (no pun intended) your time replying? There are hundreds of other topics on the board to choose from. Maybe you can clear this up for us.
As the late Johnny Carson and others have demonstrated, toilet humor can be funny.
I have a lady who comes regularly to help me clean up my abode. I've never noticed how she puts the TP on the roll. Guess I'll have to check next time.

Oh, and TP can have an aesthetic value.
