I was just looking back through my archive of old news stories and so on and came across an item from The Onion from January 18, 2001 - immediately prior to the Bush inauguration. Though intended as satire, it was downright scary. The headline reads:

Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Properity Is Finally Over'

The piece begins as follows:
QUOTE
WASHINGTON, DC—Mere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."

"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."

The whole piece is worth a look and pretty accurately predicts the direction this entire administration has since taken - frighteningly so. They could literally have been scripting the past two years. You can find it in their archive here.
