QUOTE
Online pornographers and religious groups are in a rare alliance as a key Internet oversight agency nears a decision on creating a virtual red-light district through a ".xxx" Internet address.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which has already rejected similar proposals twice since 2000, planned to vote as early as next week on whether to approve the domain name for voluntary use by porn sites.

. . .

Porn sites are largely concerned that the domain name, while billed as voluntary, would make it easier for governments to later mandate its use . . .

ICM Registry Inc., the company behind the proposal, has vowed to fight any government efforts to compel its use . . .

. . .

The Free Speech Coalition believes a domain name for kids-friendly sites would be more appropriate.

Given its voluntary nature, ".xxx" is unlikely to have much effect on parents' ability to block porn sites.

. . .

Religious groups worry that ".xxx" would legitimize and expand the number of adults sites . . .

To be debated:

Is the creation of the Dot Triple X domain name a good idea or a bad idea, and why?

I believe it's an excellent idea but 13 years to late. If they would have started out this way back in the day by now most of the porn sites would probably be on the .xxx simply because people searching for porn would just expect it and so the natural flow of the market would lead them to that standard.

It would make it a lot easier to filter out unwanted websites for parents, and I don't see why a porn site requirement to register only as .xxx somehow violates free speech. I can understand why they wouldn't want to be exclusively on .xxx now because the .com is to established so many people wouldn't even know about the .xxx so it would hurt business.

I think it's a great idea if it makes it easier to find quality porn. devil.gif

It seems to me that it would be easy to redirect from old domain names for an adjustment period, and most people presumably use a search engine rather than just typing addresses in.
Certainly, it would have been a good idea to do it earlier, but that's no reason not to do it now.
I can see the worry of the domain becoming mandatory, but it seems like that's a worry to deal with when and if it comes up rather than using it as an excuse to ignore a good idea.

It has been voted down. End of story for now anyway.
