I guess I have the phobia of the number 13.
I dread Friday the 13ths
Why???
I have no idea. I never have really had a bad thing happen on a Friday the 13th but I just get so over stressed about it beng that day.
I think it is not so much it being a Friday I just hate the number 13 for some reason and I have no idea why.
I know tomorrow I will be thinking all day about it being Friday the 13th and anticipating a bad thing.
Does anyone else have a phobia?
Like a breaking a mirror or walking under a ladder black, cat passing you etc?
None of those bother me. Just the number 13.
God I need a life tongue.gif tongue.gif

It always passes through the old noggin that Friday the 13th brings with it bad luck, so be careful! Then the next thought is that it is just medieval superstition, so don't worry about it. A blizzard is supposed to be coming in today. That will likely be bad luck for some who don't drive well in this stuff or haven't prepared. Sometimes bad things happen even when all precautions have been taken.

In other numeral systems of belief, 13 is actually lucky. It's a baker's dozen, you get an extra donut!

Think this goes back to childhood influences, just what's considered good and bad luck. I don't see a whole lot of harm in it if it makes people extra cautious when a storm comes into the mountains. And I suppose if all you have to worry about is the date, life must be pretty good.

My mom is really superstitous (along with most other older Italians). I have relatives who went on a two hour trip, and about fifteen minutes before their destination a black cat ran in front of their car. They turned around and drove all the way back and decided not to visit. True story.

I've found that superstitions only work if you believe in them. Believe that you'll have a bad day, and you'll find yourself walking into walls. Believe that you'll have a good day, and you'll find things to perceive as "luck" that you might have ignored otherwise (unless you win the lotto, that really is good luck). Now that I think about it, I believe today will be my lucky day. I'll buy a lottery card and see. tongue.gif

BTW....My husband's plane's tale number at the last squadron was 13 at the last base, and he liked it. It seemed to bring him luck. smile.gif In fact, I think I've heard that the number 13 is considered to be very lucky in fighter squadrons, though I'm not sure why. Maybe some latent pagan thing. hmmm.gif

Obviously you're a direct descendant of Jaques de Molay. Although you'll eventually become something of a martyre and the scorn of conspiracy theorists world wide getting burned to death has left something of a mark on you psyche. Duh. laugh.gif

I am a superstitious person (thx nan) but I love friday the 13th, my youngest daughter was born on a friday the 13th.

Mrs P my nan was very much an adherent to her superstitioins too, it's a gypsy thing. She would put her clothes on inside out or backwards..and I would say to her "nan you got your dress on inside out" and she would reply..."ohhh I know, it's awful isn't it?"
It was bud luck to change it, so she just considered it to be something she had to live with for the rest of the day.

I like to focus on the good luck superstitions myself. One we always have done in my family that I have never known others to do is to "cross with silver" So anytime we open a bottle of champagne to celebrate..which we have been known to do for bdays, baby births etc. we cross the cork with a silver coin. I have a drawer full of crossed corks.

Friday the 13th typically are some of my best days for some reason. I try not to dwell on it so much because it's an obsessive/compulsive trait to get hung up on it. Meaning, whatever is meant to happen, wil happen. Dates, the color of your underwear, or which side of bed you crawl out of has nothing to do with anything.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to drive home and change clothes, making sure I put my left leg through first.

I've always had good Friday 13ths. I don't think I have any superstitions (knock on wood w00t.gif ). And if black cats were bad luck, I'd be in a heap o' trouble! There are 8 feral kitties hanging out at my place now, all of them black or black/white. And that doesn't count the 2 I have inside. laugh.gif

I have never had a memorable Friday the 13th experience.

Today has been mixed.

Good: One of my chairs was broken and I got it repaired this morning.

Bad: My part of Texas is under a severe thunderstorm warning with possible tornadoes and hail. w00t.gif

Unfortunately there are no black cats roaming the neighborhood. sad.gif

Although Friday and the number 13 have been considered unlucky for some time, there is no evidence that "Friday the Thirteenth" was considered as particularly unlucky until the 20th Century.

QUOTE
(The claim that the Friday the 13th superstition began with the arrest of the final Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques Demolay, on Friday, October 13, 1307, is a modern-day invention.)

. . .

Books of English folklore generally cite a 1913 Notes & Queries reference as the earliest known expression of Friday the 13th as a day of evil luck, and this corresponds to what we found when we searched The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times for similar references. In both newspapers the first mentions of the ill-fated date occured in 1908 . . .

I find this particularly interesting:

QUOTE
. . .a 1913 piece described a minister who offered to marry free of charge any couple willing to take the matrimonial plunge on Friday the 13th . . .

I got engaged on a Friday the Thirteenth, and we were married on a Friday the Thirteenth. So far it has been lucky for me, and we celebrate each time Friday the Thirteenth comes around.

This Friday the 13th went pretty good for me and my friends. I'm a member of Oakwood College's "Honda Campus All-Star Challenge" team and Friday was round one of national competition

6-1 that day and an overall a playoff appearance in the sweet sixteen before the University of District Columbia finally ended our run.

Those of you who haven't seen enough of my ugly mug can catch it grinning on a spread in USA today on May.. 5th I think... along with the greatest team in the history of teamdom tongue.gif

Even the quote provided in your link refers to it as an "ancient superstition"

13 has been considered unlucky because it is one more than 12.

Witches gathering in 12's with the 13th being the devil.

A gathering of 12 Norse gods interrupted by a 13th - Loki.

12, I guess, is a good number.

Fridays have long been considered unlucky. So, a Friday falling on the 13th would be considered very unlucky.

We'll get another one in July, so brace yourselves. wink.gif
