Not much "ordinary" TV watching goes on in our home (not because I'm such a brilliant intellectual, but because I don't have time.) However, we do use the tube to record old movies and watch them at our leisure. The most useful station for this purpose is Turner Classic Movies. Any station which can provide me with silent films, bawdy pre-Code Hollywood features of the early 1930's, and cult choices such as
The Crazies and
The Born Losers is OK in my book.

We don't have cable, nor do we have an antenna. Our TV is used to watch DVDs. However, there are two television shows we download on iTunes - The Office and Battlestar Galactica. Both are great shows. Oh and I recently saw that the NBC website streams "Heroes" free, so over the course of a few days I watched all 18 episodes... that was a bit of a guilty pleasure, I suppose.
We were big fans of the original British version of "The Office" - our London cousin turned us on to the DVDs - so I was dismissive of the American version at first. Indeed, the first episode of Season one was almost the same script as the first one from the British, so I wasn't inclined to watch more. Soon, however, they improved a lot, and now I think it is every bit as funny as Ricky Gervais' original (he is an executive producer of the American version). Sometimes funnier.
By the way, anyone who likes Gervais' work, please please please find the podcasts of the Ricky Gervais Show. Oh my god that is funny. Karl Pilkington, you are a genius!

Battlestar Gallactica- I am fan #1 !!
I occasionally watch the "rides" reality (kinda) show on TLC and Discovery, some of the bike building and car building shows, for proffesional reasons, if they argue too much, I switch it off.

We stick to Discovery, History, and Comedy Central channels. We got the Discovery Channel just to see
Planet Earth every Sunday. We'll probably purchase the DVDs. It is the best film covering wildlife I have ever seen.
I don't think anything we watch is unusual. I walk away feeling a little "smarter" watching Engineering Disasters, How It's Made, Extreme Engineering, Man vs. Wild (the host can get naked
any time he needs to), Myth Busters, Babies: Special Delivery (I think this was the show that covered one diabetic woman's journey successfully giving live birth...
after 10+ stillbirths), Modern Marvels, Mail Call, Weird Weapons, Band of Brothers, Decoding The Past, Mega Movers, Mega Disasters, Biblical Disasters and Banned From The Bible. I think that's it. We don't watch any show religiously. We channel surf and see what's on. If my set didn't fit in the corner between my desk and Robert's I doubt we'd watch this much TV. Alas, he doesn't think playing video games without the distraction of a show is normal.
On Comedy Central it's Colbert, Stewart, Mencia, Dave Chappelle and Reno 911. The only thing I pay attention to on the SciFi channel is Galactica. I hate what they've done to Dr. Who.

Okay- Lesley- I could pretty much hang out with you in front of the Tv- except all that birthing stuff. I get a bit tired of that.

Oh it wasn't like that. I mean yeah, they eventually followed women into the "OR", but the camera didn't zoom in or anything.
I should rephrase what I said. She had the stillbirths prior to production. The show just covered her successful birth. I don't remember whether the mother looked into the camera and made the admission or the narrator said it, but I thought damn—technology sure isn't helping adoption. It wasn't just her, either. Several women with preexisting medical conditions were trying to have babies. They weren't always successful. Most had premies. I guess it was that particular show's "theme".

24 is the mother of guilty pleasures, that is a given. But one show that is climbing the ranks in my book is Man v. Wild on the Discovery Channel. Basically an ex-British Special Forces soldier is sent into crazy environments (Alps. Amazon, Nevada Desert, Deserted Island, exc...) and basically has to survive with nothing but a knife and his knowledge of the landscape. This is not reality tv...this is legit tv. By far the most entertaining thing i have watched in a long time.

My favorite program I watch on Tv's regular channels is House. I love that program
But I do watch Travel channel here all the time along with the Discover channel.
I love watching the World Poker Tour. Geez I wish I had the money and guts to do that.
And We have it set up on TIVO for How it's Made. Made in America, Dirty Jobs etc.
Tv is the greatest inventon along with Cable or Directv in the world.
"BUT" the best is AD.

I love
Boston Legal (Denny Crane!

) and
Monk. I have also enjoyed the NBC series
Heroes. Things that are a little campy and far-fetched are fine with me.
This might sound silly, but I worry about the Brit on
Man v. Wild. I don't think he is supposed to elicit feelings of maternal concern.

I spent half the day yesterday watching Planet Earth. It is a great mini series. You just gotta love cannibal chimpanzees, fungi that infect the brains of specific insects, tree frogs that reproduce via rape and other oddities of nature. And that was all in one episode (Rain Forest).
I am a channel surfer and I don't have any show that I watch regularly now that
Rome on HBO has concluded. I watch a lot of History Channel (I like Digging for the Truth and other history shows), Discovery, National Geographic. I'm also a sports nut so I watch a lot of football, basketball, and baseball. But I'm always channel flipping.

Cooking shows: Good Eats, Everyday Italian, Food 911
I don't like most of the "reality shows", enjoy watching mainstream action shows, have a love/hate take on Boston Legal.
Love Modern Marvels and the like.... but I've seen very little television the last 6 months.

I'm not a big TV watcher but there is something addictive about Hogan Knows Best. The way you can have an ex-wrestler give modern feel-good parables is strange in today's television.

The only real guilty pleasure I have is when I occasionally tune in to Deal or No Deal. This usually happens when I switch NBC on a bit early in anticipation of Heroes (no guilt there - Heroes handily replaced Lost in my affections as one of the few network programs I watch more or less faithfully). I suppose I watch Deal or No Deal for the same reason some people slow down for traffic accidents. The contestants tend to be among the worst people on the planet (I don't think I've seen one yet that I didn't want to literally slap across the face). Fortunately, they also tend to make the worst possible decisions and watching them lose tens of thousands of dollars on a weekly basis is extremely satisfying. For once, stupidity is its own reward.

Lately I've been watching cheesy late 80s - early 90s sitcoms. It started with Roseanne on Nickelodeon. Now I'm enjoying watching The Wonder Years on ION TV (I had never heard of ION either). Now, where's that loser emoticon...

I also like a couple of the Food Network shows, mainly Iron Chef and mainly to get new ideas for things to cook.
I've also been watching How It's Made on the Discovery Channel. I love shows like that.
And of course, the Simpsons. Our lame Fox affiliate chooses to postpone the Simpsons until 3am, choosing instead to rerun Tyra Banks and Extra.

They're also stuck on Season 17. They've been repeating it over and over for months now, and I have the spreadsheet to prove it! (...again looking for the loser emoticon...)
Gameshows? I watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy just about every day, and I watch Identity whenever I stumble across it.
And last, lazy Thursdays. After doing the
radio show on Wednesdays, we usually relax on Thursdays and have some good quality time with Earl, The Office, Scrubs, 30 Rock, and Shark.

I went gonzo over Six Feet Under when Bravo aired all 4 (5? 3?) seasons. That show ROCKED! But, now I've seen the whole shebang, so nothing really stands out. For regular ol' network TV, House is my pick.
But I usually split my TV viewing time between Animal Planet and Discovery. The Planet Earth series was incredible. I watched the making-of this weekend. Some of the crazy things those photogs did to get those amazing shots was entertaining. I felt sorry for the poor guy trying to capture that one-second blast of a shark flying out of the water and snatching a seal. And the ones filming the penguins...brrrrr!!!
But, by far my favorite part was the snow leopards and the Amur (sp?) leopards - I'd never even heard of the latter. Gorgeous series - not a dud among them.

I like the usual - 24, House, Idol, and Boston Legal. I actually go out of my way to watch those shows. Anything else on TV is the cable news shows - Fox, MSNBC, and CNN.
But the show that is a guilty pleasure and I never can get enough of, is Red Green. This guy is just like Tim "The Toolman" Allen, except he uses duct tape to fix everything. It's hilarious.

The only television we watch is Animal Planet. The kids prefer it to cartoons, and it's educational.
I sometimes worry about the violence, when they have shows like "extreme animals" but, it's real and doesn't seem to give them nightmares. The most over-the-top scene I've watched with them was when crocodiles killed some antelope trying to cross a river. But there's a good life lesson to avoid crocodiles (and more importantly, alligators that live near their grandparents' yard in Florida). And no message that violence is "cool" and they should attack antelopes.
Mostly it's just very very interesting.
