It's been quite sometime since I've logged on, but I think I remember well enough how to do this. biggrin.gif

Over the past several months there has been alot of talk about a certain man by the name of Marc Emery. He is the self proclaimed "Prince of Pot" and faces extradition to the United States for prosecution. He stands with several counts of selling marijuana seeds online to U.S. citizens and is looking at life in prison here. In Canada however he faces a small fine.

The Poll above is the same as the question I am about to present-

Should Marc Emery be extradited for his crimes?

If so why?

If not, why not?

I have provided a several links for more in depth reading. My opinion to follow shortly.'

No, he shouldn't. The guy was selling seeds on the Internet for goodness sakes. w00t.gif And, he was selling them from Canada, not the US. If that's against the law in Canada, then let the Canadians prosecute him under their laws and if the US attorneys want to go after someone, maybe they might actually go after someone who bought the seeds and grew them here in the US. I'm sure we have plenty of law enforcement investigators who have nothing better to do than tracking seed sales on the Internet.

I'm not a proponent of legalizing marijuana, I think that would be a bad idea and probably the subject for another thread, but quite frankly there are a whole lot worse crimes going on out there in cyberspace than selling seeds from Canada. At least the people buying the seeds are actually getting something for their money. Other Internet criminals are ripping people off for tens of thousands of dollars and nobody in law enforcement seems to give a rat's behind about that. They apparently "don't have the resources" to investigate those crimes and now I know why. They are too dang busy chasing down a seed seller from British Columbia. unsure.gif

So, let the Canadians deal with him under their laws or if he's stupid enough to enter the US, then arrest him and charge him here. Otherwise, why not take a novel approach and spend our resources going after real criminals? whistling.gif

Should Marc Emery be extradited for his crimes?

The United States Drug Enforcement Agency finds itself in a real pickle here. If they don't try to bring Emery into the USA to face trial for his admitted crimes, they look like they are willing to tolerate the sale of marijuana seeds to Americans. If they do try to bring Emery into the USA, they will (rightly) be seen as enforcing draconian drug laws to an outrageous degree.

The fact that this Johnny Potseed could, in theory, face a life sentence or even the death sentence as a drug "kingpin" points out the lack of proportion between the crime and the punishment. Make no mistake; Emery is pretty much walking around with a sign saying "Arrest me!" and waving it in the face of the United States. He wants to make the DEA look like fools and/or totalitarians, and he's doing a pretty good job.

The best solution to this public relations nightmare might be for the DEA to do whatever it can to quietly shut down Emery's operation within the USA, and let Canada do as it pleases.
