Hello Everyone,

I have been told this is the place to have great, civil debates. I have found myself slipping into the flame war abyss, and my debating style has suffered for it. I enjoy good, challenging debates with well thought out arguments. Hopefully, you all will keep me on my toes and I hope to do the same in return. I have looked around the forum a bit and I am really impressed with the level of discourse.

As far as politics, I am a southern liberal and have been all of my life (although I have moved around the country quite a bit). I am finding myself moving farther to the left as I learn more. Having said that, I can appreciate conservative opinions, even if I may disagree. I do enjoy balance and I feel all sides shoud have a place in government. I wish we had more.

I just don't know if I really understand the definition of the terms liberal and/or conservative. I sorta kinda know what they mean to me, but .....

What do they mean to you? and What do you consider "southern"?

Southern as in from the south- southern states. Liberal as in progressive ideas. Pro-environment, pro-choice, pro-union, pro-individual freedoms as in gay rights/ gay marriage, pro-feminism, pro-social welfare, pro-universal healthcare, pro-progressive tax, etc. Did you have an issue in mind?

No, I was just fishin'. I think you'd be better off callin' yourself "progressive" though. You're "pro" this and "pro" that and "pro" everything else as far as I can see. How is that "liberal"?

I ain't blowin' smoke. I really don't know. I've always been confused by those terms; liberal & conservative. It seems to me like people should be liberal and conservative in degrees on each and every specific issue. It's like shades of grey.

I'm all for the environment. If you eat, you're a part of agriculture.
I'm all for choice. We ought to be free to make bad one's.
I'm all for bein' gay. Just don't try bein' gay on me or my nephew.
