Yesterday, Tony Blair's long goodbye ended with his resignation from both the office of Prime Minister and from UK domestic politics.

At the same time, he was confirmed in a new job as Peace Envoy to the Middle East, nominated by the USA, the EU, the UN and Russia, to be based in Jerusalem, but with a remit beyond just the Israel/Palestine issue.

Disregarding, for the moment, that these four nominating bodies make about as much sense as the USA, the Pacific North West, California and Texas nominating someone for national office in the USA (and say something about the regard in which the EU, USA and Russia hold the UN), here are some questions for debate:

What will Tony Blair bring to bear in the Middle East that hasn't been tried before?

What should be his first 5 steps?

What are his chances of success, and how would you define that success anyway?

A winsome smile? mrsparkle.gif

Not much, unless he manages to get all the significant parties to green light the Israelis in dealing with the Palestinian culture of terror appropriately.

What should be his first 5 steps?
To the airport, outta town. A useless Nobel Peace Prize is all he's likely to get out of this, not any real results.

What are his chances of success, and how would you define that success anyway?
Slim unless he manages a paradigm change. I would define success as the elimination of Islamofascism, which will probably require the elimination of Islam in the same way that Nazism was defeated and humiliated. I don't think Tony has that in mind.

Will Blair sort out the Palestine problem? oh look there goes the first squadron of flying pigs.

To many people have a vested interest in the Middle East States and Israel to allow the two state solution to come about.

Blair is to close to Bush to be acceptable to the Muslim faction and States, but he will be the target of every hardliner seeking to bring glory to the cause of Islam.

The "two state solution" was implemented in 1947. Its known as "Israel and Jordan" That solution was unacceptable to the Arab League then, and is unacceptable now.

Nothing. You have large groups of people who hate Jews so much they want to "push them into the sea" - you can't negotiate that.

"Well how about halfway into the sea?"

"Never! You infidel pig!"

"Three quarters then?"

"Allah akbar! The streets will flow with your blood! I want an XBox!

What should be his first 5 steps?

1. Come up with a plan
2. Write down the plan
3. Present the plan
4. ???
5. Profit!

The chances are nil.

Success would be an Arab World that was tolerant of other religions, including the Jews. An Arab World that valued life on this planet and not just in the next. An Arab world that was contributing to the entire planet in someway.

Umm... no. Jordan was separated from the Palestine Mandate in 1922. The two-state solution implemented in 1948 - not 1947 - involved only the Palestine Mandate. Your facts are a tad off, BD.
