Well, speaking for myself, I gave up the idea of any tonsorial extravagances at about the age of 21, since the choices for me are limited to
- A short buzz-cutt
- A comb over
- Totally shaved
- A wig
I tried shaving, but to be honest I'm lazy enough that shaving my face daily is a chore that I often skip, so doing my whole head was just too much like hard work (though I kept it up for a year, since the attentions of women, who almost universally wanted to touch my shaven head made it almost worthwhile

). My dad wore a comb-over and the sight of him constantly pulling the flapping strands into place whenever more than a breath of wind blew put me off that for life.
Wigs are for wimps and little boys who refuse to grow up - yes, Elton, I'm talking to you - it's called Male Pattern Baldness for a reason: it happens to
men not boys or women*
So I'm left with a buzz cut as my only tenable option. And whether I buy a Wahl trimmer and do it myself at home, go to a corner shop barber and pay a fiver or so ($10 at the moment), or fly my personal "hair consultant" across a continent, my hair is going to look the same afterwards. I usually go for the Wahl, but every now and again I like to treat myself by going to the corner shop barbers.
I only ever went to a "salon" once, and for the quadrupling of the price I was used to paying, I got the same haricut I would have got at the corner shop, with more staff flapping around, moreexpensive reading matter in the waiting area, and more luxurious surroundings. None of these things significantly added to the experience or the quality of the haircut.
I can only conclude John Edwards has more money than sense. (And, for a man who makes his living by conning live people into thinking he can talk to dead ones for money, there's a kind of Zen circularity to that, which is nice.)
*I have known one or two unfortunate women who have suffered from baldness (and, unlike most men, there is genuine suffering involved). The most sensible response there is to shave it all off, I reckon, though a good wig is ok too.
