State Farm drops gun-owning homeowner

Gary ’s rosy relationship with State Farm came to a screeching halt a few months ago, when he casually mentioned to the local State Farm office that he had been shooting in a ravine back in the woods behind his house. The local agent , who he regarded as a friend, didn’t like that, and questioned Gary closely. Shooting? With guns? He answered all of her questions, and even took her through the woods to the ravine so she could see the area for herself. She wasn’t happy. Neither was the home office. State Farm promptly cancelled Gary ’s coverage for what the company called “the operation of the shooting range on your property ” .

This homeowner was cancelled, because he owned guns and shot them legally on his property. Some drivers cannot get auto insurance if they 'fess up to owning a radar detector (Legally once again)

In some instances insurance is required (Auto-liability). Home-owners is usually require for a mortgage.

If government agencies regulate how much they may or may not charge us. And government agencies require us to have certain insurance(s). Why is it that the choice to insure is at the discretion of the insurance company then?

Should insurance be made a state or Federal function rather then private?

No, there are plenty of other insurance companies. The man learned an important lesson, insurance agents are not your friend.

Insurances are a business. A business should be able to decide if they want a particular person as a customer or not. If a insurance business deems guns to be a high risk for claims above their typical client they should not be required to provide coverage.

Heaven forbid more government involvement in the insurance business! Take a look at health insurance before you ask for this.

Almost nobody I can think of could do a worse job at helping people then insurance companies. The government would find some way to do it. If the government totally subsidised health insurance doctors would be worse off then they are now if that is possible. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif
