Today we tested the MOAB. Very publicly. We have surrounded Iraq with more than 250,000 troops. Very publicly. We have repeatedly tried to set a firm date for disarmament. Very publicly.

Are these the actions of a warmongering government? Or is it more like a gov't that is doing everything it possibly can to avoid a war?

Either way. It's dual purpose.

If there is a chance to avoid war, it's by convincing Saddam that we're so serious that he'll fall all over himself to comply. And if there had been unity among the Security Council, we might already have achieved that. But nooooo, the French had to be so, so.... so French.

And if we can't avoid war, then it is well to intimidate the enemy as much as possible so they'll surrender sooner, thus ending the war and avoiding unnecessary casualties.

I don't think it's warmongering

It's the U.S. government playing the Psychological game to get saddam to comply or to get saddam to go into exile/surrender himself

The testing of the new bomb was nicely done as a psychological ploy because letting the enemy know what we have in the way of toys will get saddam nothing more than his own soldiers giving up to Gearldo

I can see how doing this (playing the psychological game), getting soldiers to defect & surrender on the field, thus preventing Military casualties on our & Saddam's side, also thus, shortening the war & keeping the American public cool....and i am rambling & making no sense blink.gif wacko.gif

I say no.

We have tried diplomacy for over a decade with little success. Even now it has been said several times publicly that the way for Iraq to avoid war is to completely disarm. If Saddam disarmed tommorow, peace would be guaranteed. Considering the amount of chances Saddam has been given to comply, I think it is a ridiculous statement to accuse the U.S. of war-mongering.

We are trying everything to scare Saddam into backing down. Saber rattling, if you will. It isn't working (as it has in the past) because we are being undermined in the UN.

Look at what happened last Friday after Hans Blix spoke. He made it seem like Iraq was being a good boy and that progress was being made. (Of course, he also said that Iraq remains in non-complinace, but that is glossed over.)

Almost as soon as he was done and France made its public statements about letting inspectors "do their job" the Iraqis proposed lifting all sanctions, removing no-fly zones and rebuking the United States. As soon as there was a glimmer that the US might need to back down, Iraq was already pushing that they are being unfairly targetted.

The buildup and weapons testing SHOULD scare the bejeebers out of Saddam, but they don't (publicly at least).

As George Bush said, the choice is up to Saddam to disarm.
