OKay, we have started some free for all debating on Israel. Part of it has been directly or indirectly debating the origin of history.

The questions for debate in this thread:

At its inception in 1948, how did Israel become a nation? Be specific and accurate.

Was there injustice in this event?

What parties are the main causes of the injustice and why?

Have fun and stick to facts whenever possible and avoid the rhetoric. flowers.gif

At its inception in 1948, how did Israel become a nation? Be specific and accurate.

In 1947, the United Kingdom informed the UN of its desire to terminate its position as Mandatory Power and evacuate Palestine by August 1948. The UN passed a resolution recommending partition into a Jewish State and an Arab State - the borders of which seemed to me to be unworkable. This non-binding resolution was accepted by the Jewish population and rejected by the Arab population. The UK abandoned the Mandate in May 1948, Israel became a state by declaring independence and war broke out immediately.

Was there injustice in this event?

The injustice is that the UN allowed the UK to abandon the Mandate without assigning another mandatory power. Resolution 181 was non-binding and required the acceptance of all parties to go forward. This clearly wasn't the case. Another injustice occurred when the UN, once Israel declared statehood, did not establish the Arab areas as remaining under Mandatory control of the Trusteeship Council.

What parties are the main causes of the injustice and why?

The parties largely responsible for the injustice would be the United Nations for the reasons I specified above.

Why do we need yet another Israel thread? Aren't we discussing these very points on the "right to exist" thread?

Because this thread isn't about Israel's right to exist. This thread is about how Israel became a nation. I responded to this thread because the opening post was less inflammatory than the thread you mention. If you don't wish to post in this thread, fine. But I hope you will allow me the freedom to post in whatever open thread I choose, thank you very much.
