Hi all,

I'm just looking for a good place to sound off. I'm a 30 yo tech support guy in Southern California, though I'm originally from Marietta, Ohio. Politically I'm one of those socialy liberal, fiscaly conservative types. I believe strongly in the KISS principle. My personal philosphy has evolved into:

A person does what they want, and becomes what they do, whether they know it or not.

I read and I game.

Some, though I shy away from the massives. Mostly FPS's and turn-based strategy (It's a long story, but I experience serious stress when I play most real-time games, so the fun's not really there for me.) All time favorites include X-COM:UFO, Jagged Alliance 2, and the Fallout series.

PC only. I'm not a PC snob, I'm a console racist. You dirty paddle-slappers are ruining the software development business. Go slap a paddle! Free Dead Rising!

:]

Thank you, I'm sure I will. Everyone seems very friendly and informed. I'm sure I'll learn much.

@Lesly

I see you're based in Columbus, OH. I'm an (The)OSU alumni (though I've sobered up now :] ). My brother still lives there. Good to see a fellow Buckeye around. I'm just about full of the west coast. Weather aside, I much prefer home.

I'm more of a Caribbean/Tropic of Cancer weather person myself. I don't mind the heat, humidity and sweat (what little I actually sweat, which boggles and irritates my boyfriend). To me walking around in shorts year round is normal; shoveling yourself out of a driveway igloo is not. I had to do that in Vermont. I wanted to pull my hair out. It's quite unnatural to my way of thinking. Columbus isn't nearly that bad but I wish spring and summer were longer, and winter much shorter. shifty.gif

Aside from NWN I haven't played many PC games. Mostly I stick to MMORPGs. Right now that's LoTRO.

I honestly miss the autumn the most. All they have in California is a short spring and a long summer. I'm mostly an inside cat, anyhow.

I finished NWN2 a couple months ago. The end was kinda weak, but it was a fun one. Please don't take my console-hate too seriously. I'm just jealous that the tide has turned against the PC on the new game side. I never hated consoles until they started releasing exclusives that I wanted to play. Also, the title they do port to PC are plagued with primitive interfaces that you can't alter. If I can't get my keyboard layout the way I want it, I just won't play the game, no matter how pretty it is.

Beside, I'll have my sweet revenge when they start throwing console gamers and PC gamers into the same deathmatches, where the PC gamer will have a decided advantage.

It seems we have a lot in common, I'm a computer tech that got into computers originally JUST TO PLAY X-COM!!! tongue.gif You dang near had to be a tech to play that game considering the 600KB of the free unconventional requirement in DOS.

I finished NWN2 a while back and was really impressed with it, although I agree with you on the ending. I'm looking forward to the expansion coming out in the next month or so.

I'm right there with you on PC gaming vs. console gaming. I used to be a console gamer back in the day of nintendo, super nintendo, etc... but once I got on the PC and played turn-based strategy games and the like, I haven't bought a console since. Besides....I only have ten fingers, why are there 40 buttons on those dang controllers?!?!? laugh.gif

I'm also pretty close to your socially liberal, fiscally conservative spectrum.

Anyway, welcome to the boards!

I came to X-COM a bit late, in the Win9x days, but I remember DOS, starting with 3.0. Making those boot disks was an art form, and they were absolutely the beginning of my tech experience. :]
Ataal
Well, I never used boot disks myself. I was hell-bent on making it work without them, which meant hours upon hours of trial and error working with the autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Memmaker did a decent job at opening up free unconventional memory, but usually only got you to around 585KB, X-COM(and most games, including the original Warcraft) required 600KB.

Since you like X-COM, you'll probably like This game , which is basically a sequel, although I'd put it in between X-COM Ufo Defense and X-COM Terror from the deep. It's basically the same game, but with a LOT more researching options, including new weapons, hovercrafts, etc... AND it's turn-based! We turn-based guys are a dying breed, most people like the chaotic, he-who-clicks-fastest-wins type of games these days.
