BoF

I pitched and played 1st base in pony league. I had a good fastball that naturally cut into a right handed batter. I held the record for hit batsmen in a season – eleven – including the first batter I faced. How’s that for a dubious record.

My team mates and manager started calling me “Fireball.”
This is the only board I now post on, but when I registered on some other boards “Fireball” was taken, so I became “Ball of Fire.” People started shortening it to
BoF, which I like better, so I registered on this board as
BoF. To quote
Spiro Agnew,
"it’s become a household word."
My real name is Don, but that's common and maybe boring.

I said maybe boring, but I'm glad to hear it isn't.

Donald is supposed to mean ruler - like Mafia Dons I suppose. I've never ruled much of anything, not even my cats. I've always seen being in charge as more work and less goof-off time.

Ataal
Nov 24 2007, 02:42 AM
Well, my real name is Len for those of you who don't attend the AD Radio chatroom.
Ataal is actually an acronym that I have used for for passwords and screen names for 15 years. It stands for the first letter of the first name of my first five girlfriends. Alicia, Tina, Allison, Amy, and Lisa. Shortly after using Ataal in chatrooms in the late 90's, I found out that it's an actual name used in the Middle East. Who knew?
KivrotHaTaavah

kirvot hataavah, a variant way of saying, in Hebrew, "graves of the craving". Not for you but for me, as a reminder to self to bury the craving so that one, me, might accomplish mission. For the cross-over into "indoctrination", see the material here under the headings "Admissions" and "Service" for a statement of mission:

Paladin Elspeth
Nov 24 2007, 04:44 PM
A paladin is a righteous knight in shining armor, at least in fantasy roleplaying games. "Elspeth" is a Scottish form of the name Elizabeth. I first encountered the name while watching the movie The Dragonslayer.
I used to play the Balder's Gate series on my pc. I've always loved my paladin character Elspeth, who was the epitome of nobility and grace; hence, the username.
The avatar is one that one of the members here, Cyan, kindly provided. It is Ingrid Bergman in the role of Joan of Arc. I keep coming back to it.
The current caption below the avatar, Vocatus atque non vocatus Deus aderit, is "Bidden or unbidden, God is present." Carl Jung had it mounted above his doorway.

(2.) It's one of my favorite J.Geils Band songs.
Whichever option you choose you'll be right.
AuthorMusician
Nov 25 2007, 04:40 PM
Back in 2001 I got laid off my tech gig and it became real hard to find another with the restriction of staying in Colorado by hook or by crook. Since I'm not a crook, I needed a hook.
That is, change the career focus. After analyzing my strongest skills and desires, it turned out I wanted to be an alcoholic writer who rides motorcycle. Not many listings for that on Monster, so I figured I'd try to be a freelance writer and fire up the old music gigs again.
So it was changing when changing was needed, drawing a bullseye and shooting for it.
Then I remembered what a pain in the tush the music business is and why I dropped out of it in the 1980s. Really it's all Author for making money now, but I still enjoy music on my own time, so AM will do for the duration.
I have written a few books, a couple of which got published. Still do that sort of thing too, just not as fiercely. When you count it all up, freelancing pays better than writing books unless you snag a bestseller, which is like getting into the top forty on the music charts. Plus you can work your tush off for years writing books and not make a dime.
And freelancing beats the stuffing out of Wal*Mart

Nemo

Nemo means “no one.” Nemo was the mysterious law writer in Charles Dickens’ novel Bleak House, and the equally mysterious captain of the Nautilus in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Seas; which fictional characters most closely resemble my true character.

lederuvdapac
Nov 26 2007, 10:23 PM
when i was a young lad trying to come up with a clever screen name for AOL 3.0, i liked the title of "leader of the pack". It was partly influenced by the pro-wrestling (NWO: Wolfpac for those who used to/still watch wrestling). Unfortunately the phrase did not fit within the approved limit of AOL. My original screen name was "lederuvdapac2001". It probably would have made more sense if I made it "leaderuvdapac2k1" (maintaining the "a") or something. But hey it sticked and i still like it!
entspeak
Nov 27 2007, 08:33 AM
entspeak is a word I made up.
In 1997, I was signing up for my first web based email account - Hotmail (before Microsoft bought it). My name was taken so I thought I'd try an original one.
Ents are the tree giants of The Lord of the Rings. In Entish - the language of the Ents, it can take a very long time to say hello. Considering the relatively instant nature of email, I thought entspeak would be an ironic email address. I started using it as a handle.
For some reason, now, the word has come to remind me of just how much we, as a society, have moved away from an appreciation of and connection to language.

This name came to me out of the blue many years ago, long before there was an Internet, as the name of my alternate personality. I suppose it had a sort of Romantic Goth feel to it, long before there was such a subculture. Growing up with Morticia Addams as my role model may have had something to do with it.
Aquilla
Nov 27 2007, 12:26 PM
My name is a variation of the latin word for Eagle (Aquila). I am half Comanche by birth and the Eagle is very important in the American Indian culture. Eagle feathers are awarded for special achievements and I have a few of those which are among my most prized possessions. (and yes, it is legal for me to have them). I forget now when I first used this name or why I added the second L, but I like it the way it is and even use it as the name of my home business. By the way, I pronounce it as Ah-key-la (rhymes with Tequila which isn't a bad thing either).

vanguard
Nov 27 2007, 01:38 PM
Mine is the namesake for the Santa Clara Vanguard out of Santa Clara, California. They are a drum and bugle corps of which I am a diehard fan. Their sister corps, the Concord BlueDevils, is the antithesis of the Vanguard (you know, the evil alter-ego or something like that). I also like it because it makes me think I'm on the
vanguard of something really big though I know not what...

Nov 27 2007, 04:33 PM
After seeing Aquilla's post, I am filled with a sudden burst of guilt.
I read the name Akalae on the internet somewhere, the exact URL escapes me. I thought it was a nice-sounding name, faintly reminiscent of Native Americans, and so I chose it for this site. Now, of course, i realize that this was nothing more than a petty usurpation of Aquilla's ancestral culture. Still, too late to change it now.
If I could prostrate myself, I would. In this case, however, I hope that my apologies will be enough, Aquilla.

Trouble
Nov 27 2007, 05:52 PM
Mine was a nickname that I picked up after visting three people on separate occasions after which they all died. The statistical odds were astounding. Later I developed a knack of knowing precisely how to exasperate any given situation whether I was familariar with it or not. I gained a reputation as an oracle of bad tiddings because I guessed right more often than I was wrong. I'd make a good cross between a Vincent Price and a Mordecai Richler. Instead of fighting it I ran with it and here I am.

I was on several different BBS's when I lived in San Diego, and since all of them were small and local, I was the only one with the moniker WhiteWolf.
When I moved from CA to AZ, WhiteWolf impersonators were everywhere.
AZ - the state that I call home
White is a symbol of purity; at the time I was studying various world religions and found that white was commonly accepted as spiritually clean.
Wolf - well, I raised them for two years because a friend of mine had two of them. There is a lot of symbolism involved with wolves and I could get pretty deep, but nobody wants two pages of an Epilogue-style explanation on my screen name, right?
