Just found this AP article about Mike Huckabee's controversial Christmas commercial (the one in which he mentions Christ).

From the article: Asked whether he was running for president of Christian America, Huckabee said he was campaigning to be the "president of all America, to be the people's president. And that's how I served as governor."

I wonder, do Canadians and Mexicans and Cubans (etc.) have a say about this expansion of power?

I am curious as to what you mean? If a candidate says that they are campaigning to be president of all America, how does that affect the voting of Canadians, Mexicans and Cubans? Are you trying to expand his statement that he is trying to run all of North America? If that is the case, why stop there? Include Brazil and Equador as well, after all, that is South America. Don't forget Central America, they have feelings too!

What exactly is your point?

On another point, you bring up Huckabee's Christmas commercial and in parenthesis point out that he mentions Christ as if that is some sort of crime. Anyone that mentions Christmas is mentioning Christ. Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ. Again, what is your point, if you have one?

Because Canadians and Mexicans and (yes) Brazilians are Americans. Seems to me, Canadians, et. al should have some say in Huckabee becoming their president.

Help me understand this. You think people from foriegn countries should have a say in who is President of the Untied States? Do you have a say in who is president of Mexico? I am very confused with your logic. What say does someone from a country other than the United States have in deciding the President of the United States? How do you logically come to the conclusion that "Canadians and Mexicans and (yes) Brazilians are Americans"? Why single out just Huckabee? With your logic, don't they have a say if Hillary, or Romney are "their" president?

Of course not. The point is this: Huckabee says he wants to be president of ALL Americans, rather than president of the United States.

All right I think I'll approach this in my own characteristic fashion.

This is either:
1.) A through misunderstanding of what Huckabee meant

or... more likely

2.) A consciously ridiculous semantic runaround.

The United States of America is often contracted to "America" and its citizens "Americans."

If this is a real misunderstanding, well no harm done.

...but really it's just a commonly used contraction, that's all.

Yankswould be a much more appropriate term, don't you think? It distinguishes the people of the United States from all other Americans.
