Okay...First Post!!

I'll lay out three main reasons why school uniforms are good, as well as some minor connections with those reasons.
  • Show TRUE individuality/personality
  • Reduce Violence in Schools
  • Increase Academics
---------------

I will define school uniforms for middle and high schools.

1. They show true individuality. Those who oppose school uniforms say that regular clothing show individuality. I'd like to say to them that they are absolutely wrong. Individuality should NOT be about the clothing that you were on your back, but by your personality.People won't be immediately judged by what they are wearing, but by their personality - isn't that true individuality, not that fake stuff, AKA brand name clothing. It's clear that school uniforms do more GOOD than harm.

2. They reduce violence in schools. In Long Beach, officials found that the year after their mandatory program with parental opt-out was implemented, overall school crime decreased by 36%. In Seattle, Washington, which has a mandatory policy with an opt-out saw a decrease in truancy and tardies. Chicago school officials found a drop in gang violence after adopting school uniforms. Birmingham schools reported a drop in weapon and drug incidents, and Houston schools reported a decrease in violent crime. It also prevents teasing and tormenting because of what students wear. If that happens, students can do what they're main purpose is to do: learn.

3. Increase Academics. Okay. There's a few reasons why it increases academic performance. Instead of teachers being on the constant look-out for dress code violations, they can teach. I'm a middle school student, and there are tons of dress code violations given - is that a good thing? No. When teachers can devote 100% attention to TEACHING, than academics go up. In Japan, academics greatly increased, and they're in nearly every country in the world, and nearly every country in the world has had an academic increase.

School Uniforms should be in schools.

If you don't actually believe it, don't waste our time posting it. It is not constructive and therefore against the Rules. Please take our debates seriously.

As many of you guys wrote, uniforms are a "stifling of free expression" and so on and so forth...why are you in school? I know that when I went to school, it was solely to read CosmoGirl. And to ask how much that dreadful pair of Gucci earrings cost. Never mind math class! Nail polish! Makeup! Halter tops and mini skirts! yeehaa!

My point is, it is too easy to be distracted by what others are wearing.

And if teenagers need to wear a certain type of clothing to find their identity, then I apologize.

i have always been intersted in this topic. i personally want school uniforms for public schools. i grew up in a public school system without them and i hated it. for speech class, i have to argue why we should have uniforms. i hated walking to school and seeing body parts or skin everywhere. i realize many people feel you can not express yourself once the clothes are taken away, but that just goes to show you what society is like. you still have many options on how to express yourself, and not only that, you have hours outside of school time, be a kid then. you should not be going to school to hang out with people and discuss the latest style of clothing, you should be there to further your education. im the kind of kid that doesnt have a choice where i get my clothes, i dont have much money. and it doesnt bother me that i have to get old clothing and cheap stuff. but, it does hurt a little when people in my halls at school hit me and push on me because i dont get the expensive clothes. if i did have a choice in where i shopped, i would still shop at thrift stores. all in all, i can not sit and pay attention in class when girls are allowed to where practically nothing and you can see their butts hanging out of skirts. yes, its rather repulsive to me. the clothing issue also leads to sex in schools. and yes, thats right. we just had a major even get in the papers and all over the news because a girl was caught having sex at school. guys knew she was easy because of what she wore, and they tracked her down during school, and yes, they had sex. not a great enviroment if you ask me. thats all for now, jennie

For a libertarian, you sure don't speak like one. When you get a job, it is entirely different, as that is a volentarary thing you do for money. School is somewhere that you have to go, without a choice, until at least the age 16, and is government run. Public schools are wrong in the first place, but since we have them, they must be as free as any other government facility. It is not the government's decision what your or I wear at any time.
And, in all seriousness, WHY would anybody want a friend who gave any thought to where clothes are bought by somebody who is not themselves? These are the same people who go through High School thinking they're gods, and end up popping pills in the kitchen by 35, married to somebody they hate, with kids they don't take care of, and cheating at every chance they get. It would be ridiculus to say this happens to all of them, but it certainly does come from that materialistic personality that is that concerned about clothing that they will not be your friend or will humiliate you for what you wear.
I have plenty of friends. And (gasp!) none of them care how I dress and I respect how they dress.
Teenage years are cruel ones, people are greatly immature, but that's how life works. Personal Attack Removed You could never get me to wear a school uniform. The P.E. uniforms are bad enough! I would not do it, I'd let them throw whatever punishment at me that they want, but at a public school I will not dress how the government tells me to.

So, if the uniforms were voted on by the parents of the public school, it would be acceptable in your eyes?
