Also do you think this will start a war. This is from the same URL

N. KOREA WARNS OF ARMS RACE
But North Korea officials sharply criticized the launches.
“Japan will be held fully responsible for causing a new arms race in Northeast Asia,” an unnamed spokesman of North Korea’s Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.
In recent days, North Korea has warned that Japan’s plans to launch satellites were “a hostile activity” and a “grave threat” to the communist state.

North Korea is blowing smoke and pointing fingers.

Japan doesn't have a viable army. That's why the US has 50,000 troops there.

Besides, how can a satellite start an arms race? It is not a weapon.

As much as I hate one-liners....does the word 'Sputnik' ring any bells? wink.gif

But how does that change the fact that Japan has no military to match up to North Korea's (estimated) 1 million man army?

Sputnik was the space race, just to clarify...the arms race was the nuclear build-up between the US and USSR.

And the space-race was completely separate from the arms race? No, it was an extention of the arms race.

But more on topic - the Japanese may be engaging in what some would call an arms race, but so what? The North Koreans have been threatening the Japanese for decades, isn't this just a defensive measure on their part?

Japan has no military

Except for 180,000 ground defense forces
QUOTE
The Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) had an authorized strength in 1992 of 46,000 and maintained some 44,400 personnel and operated 155 major combatants, including thirteen submarines, sixty-four destroyers and frigates, forty-three mine warfare ships and boats, eleven patrol craft, and six amphibious ships. It also flew some 205 fixed-wing aircraft and 134 helicopters. Most of these aircraft were used in antisubmarine and mine warfare operations. The MSDF's former unit structure emphasized anti-submarine and mine warfare.

QUOTE
The Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) is the major aviation arm of the SDF. It had an authorized strength of 47,000 and maintained some 46,000 personnel and approximately 330 combat aircraft in 1992. Front-line formations include three ground-attack squadrons, nine fighter squadrons, one reconnaissance squadron, and five transport squadrons.

So they aren't totally defenseless.

However, their constitution is designed to make offensive aggression illegal. Their military is strictly for self defense. They can however provide medical support and such to conflicts as they have recently.
Abs like Jesus
"What is offensive aggression?"
"What is is?"

Offensive aggression is no longer simply offensive aggression. After all, a threat or even just a perceived threat seems justifiable for attack these days. Remember?

At any rate, I don't imagine North Korea is as worried about Japan alone so much as Japan's relations with the United States. us.gif
