What do you think?

I believe that a victory parade is in very poor taste, the whole idea makes me sick.

My reasons: I dont see how we deserve a parade for a massacre. I dont think we can have a parade when Iraq is in shambles, hospitals are inoperable and overflowing, aid has not arrived, clean water is scarce, UN sanctions have not been lifted, government is not instilled, Iraqs museums have been looted and their national patrimony lost, and Iraqi's themselves are protesting in the streets for us to get out.

Its sick to congradulate ourselves on this war, a war that split world opinion and are not even sure of what the outcome will be.
How do we know we have a victory, and victors of what?

I really hope they do not do this. mad.gif

I am not a fan of the war as I have stated previously on this site, but I believe our troops deserve a public acknowledgement of risking their lives at the request of their government. Leave politics out of this and support the troops.

The report says they're considering doing the parade on or around July 4th. So, if nothing else, there is still some time to work on any plans.

Right now, the people in Iraq are protesting Coalition presence in the country following the fall of Saddam's regime. If the climate of Iraq is still the same come June or July, I would say the parade would be a bad idea. I still won't personally agree with the idea of the parade, but I don't feel it would be nearly as problematic if things have settled some.

No matter your view on the subject, there is still international criticism that the United States only engaged in this action for control of Iraq's resources. Parading around a victory before putting these questions to bed won't, I don't feel, be in our best interest. I would think there might be other, better ways of showing our appreciation of the troops. Perhaps something a little more private and, likewise, more intimate.

I certainly wouldn't do it if Iraq is still protesting in the summer.

Im not sure this is possible. At least I dont know how, although I wasnt really speaking of politics but the state of Iraq at present.

July 4th is only 75 days away, in my opinion a little premature to declare victory, it could come around bite us back.

I think this would be in much better taste. A parade is likely to cause protests, turning the whole thing ugly.

I know that Drudge is using the term "victory parade" and quite possibly that's the way some people are viewing it, but it has always seemed to me that when we have parades honoring our soldiers they are more celebrations of their safe return and a chance to thank them for their service. I certainly don't see the problem with Americans having the chance to say, "Thank you" to our troops. If some want to attach the term "Victory" to that, ok, after all, we did win. smile.gif If others, for whatever reason don't want to view it as a victory, that's fine, shouldn't keep them from honoring our brave men and women. Personally, I think it's kind of a silly controversy.

Sorry yall, have to express my opinion on this one
First of all, we invaded Iraq to overthrow an oppresive regime that used it own citizens as test subjects for w.m.d.,that tortured their own people for not agreeing to what they were told to believe in.that w.m.d.s have not been found yet is a moot point. We invaded them and kicked their butts and toppled a oppresive regime.many fighting forces lost their lives so the people of Iraq can have a chance for the first time in their lives to find out what freedom stands for.
If the president wants to have a victory parade i say Hell Yes!! We won the war,we showed the entire world we really are the only true super power left and we will fight to make sure you and yours can have freedom to live your life as you want too.
For those of you who dont think a parade is a good idea, Stay home and watch re-runs on the tube cause myself and thousands of people like me are going to be on the streets cheering wildly for our returning heros.

This may surprise you, but I'm not in favor of a parade. I think there are too many things left to be done before 'victory' can be declared. The short term goals, like removing Saddam, are only the tip of the iceberg. Establishing a reasonably representative government is the major objective and that won't be achieved for some time. Until that happens, any celebration is premature.

On the flip side I'd like to see the president and his top officials visit bases where troops have returned and have large, but limited, celebrations there. Limited to the troops and their families being welcomed home and thanked for their courage and service by those who sent them into battle. I sense a major difference between that type of celebration and one involving a parade on the streets of a major city.

It's like an NFL team going to the Super Bowl. They celebrate amongst themselves, with the GM and owner thanking them. But the parade doesn't come until they win the big one. We still hve more work to do before we can claim total victory in that big game.
