QUOTE
"We're proud of our president. Americans love having a guy as president, a guy who has a little swagger, who's physical, who's not a complicated guy like Clinton or even like Dukakis or Mondale, all those guys, McGovern. They want a guy who's president. Women like a guy who's president. Check it out. The women like this war."

- Chris Matthews, 'Hardball' on MSNBC, 05/01/03

First of all, I recognise that most this quote really makes little sense in itself literally.( Women like a guy whos president?') I suppose he meant to say, ' women like a strong man as President', or possibly he was saying women like a man as President over a woman, I dont know.

I myself wonder why the female component was ever brought up. As if to say, women like a real man, not a wimpy intellectual and because of this 'swagger' we fall for a strong man leading us to war, its all good based upon 'physical strength' or a strong image. We shall march our sons to war behind such a man, a Bush type figure.

In my opinion, wrong. Was this some side swipe? Rhetorically, do women choose their mates because they are physical, strong, non-complicated, non- intellectuals, or because they are attentive, sensitive, thinking, well rounded men or at least we are hopeing they will be so? (someday, sour.gif )

I think we do like some strength in a President, but my choice would be with a mind, a cultured, inclusive, worldly, forward thinking thought process. Able to take on a great spectrum of ideas, family oriented; in this time on the planet, conservative with resourses, protective of global relationships and interests at home. Building a better nation for those who live in it.

My question is, on the premise of the quote, Is it true that America prefers a 'physical', 'not a complicated guy' for President, a bit of 'swagger', and , above all that , did 'women like this war' because of it?

I, as a woman, did not 'like' this war and do not like the 'swagger', especially from one so incredibly abscent of the right to 'swagger' about anything. I dont enjoy the ego overload of this administration, or its neglect to the needs of US citizens in an audacious drive for private interests, which in 2 years have benefitted few in the US, but driven us down in so many aspects. (other than the 300 dollar tax rebate/payoff we got from Bush after he was appointed)

Anyway, how do you prefer your President?

I don't think that it's possible to put all women in the same category as far as male appeal goes, but my first thought was: what difference does it make anyhow? I choose a president based on his stance on the issues and his ability to reason and problem solve. I don't give a hoot about his swagger, and that quote seems to be implying that women choose their president based on his physical nature and not his intellectual nature. Do women do that? unsure.gif Sad.

George W. is admittedly not my favourite person on the planet, and I did not support the war, although I would have if the methodology had been a bit different. I'm not fond of this administration as a whole, but it has little to do with appearances and a lot to do with a general difference of opinion on policy.

I think women are antiwar in general. I certainly don't see a lot of feminine backing for this one.

I used to watch Chris Matthews, but I haven't watched television in years (aside from Disney). Looks like I'm not missing out on much.

I guess those women who like the John Wayne movie persona, sortuva
"Don't you worry your pretty head about it, Little Lady" like a macho-talking President. cool.gif

But that type of man makes the decisions, does not ask the "little lady" what she thinks about things. mad.gif

I'm more for the sensitive kind of guy who cares about what I think; I married one. wub.gif

While many of us are anti-war and conflict, there are a lot of us who are gung ho about declaring war and kicking some serious dictator butt.
A lot of these women are soldiers or are married to soldiers. When the soldiers and their families are reunited, that's when they're truly happy. I think a lot of their pro-war rhetoric is to put up a good front. us.gif

And I suspect that even they would concede that no matter how many wars we fight, how many dictators we oust, there is no replacing the innocents who lost their lives thanks to terrorist attacks.

I liked this war as much as I'm going to like any war, and I always thought Saddam needed a good butt-kicking, though in general I'd prefer a well-armed isolationism to an imperial direction in foreign policy.

I'm not looking for "swagger" in a President, nor do I expect an intellectual. Smart enough to understand the Constitution and the issues, with the skills of a good poker player is all the smarts it takes to do the job, and I think Bush has that, though I'm not happy with all his policies. All the same, I did and still do prefer Bush to the Gore alternative.

I don't particularly care about the sex appeal or father figurehood of any President. I'm only interested in how well he/she can do the job and what his/her policies are. I used both gender pronouns there despite the awkwardness to emphasize that I think we will have a woman President in at least in the coming generation and maybe sooner. I just pray it isn't Hillary, though Rep. Jennifer Dunn (R-WA) would suit me.
