Donald Rumsfeld has released his new memoir titled Known and Unknown. The New Republic has published a brutal review of his book, as well as have other publications. You can also watch an interesting interview here.

Questions for debate:

1.)Was Donald Rumsfeld a good secretary of defense, or will he be remembered as largely, being a bad one?

2.)Does Rumsfeld deserve blame for Afghanistan and Iraq and how those wars were carried out?

3.)Does Rumsfeld owe American servicemen and women an apology?

1.)Was Donald Rumsfeld a good secretary of defense, or will he be remembered as largely, being a bad one?

Largely bad, I believe.

2.)Does Rumsfeld deserve blame for Afghanistan and Iraq and how those wars were carried out?

As SecDef, he certainly is entitled to his fair share of blame, but not all. His force structure was appropriate in both Iraq and Afghanistan for the initially stated objectives. Both the Hussein and the Taliban Regimes were overthrown, and their respective armies essentially defeated. When the political game moved to the head of the line is where things went south. He had a duty to stand firm against 'nation-building' and attempts at civil policing, and did not.....this will be his legacy.

3.)Does Rumsfeld owe American servicemen and women an apology?

Up to him to decide. It's not as if there is a trend of precedent for someone of this stature to do so, ala' McNamara.
