Growing up in Missouri and now living in Texas I know where you are coming from. Most individuals I know that are conservative Democrats remain so because they are pro-labor. There are a lot of blue-collar people who oppose abortion, hate welfare and higher taxes but are pro labor sometimes with a capital L.
Before 1998, I would have said I was STRONGLY pro-labor. That was the year I joined the NEA. After one year of paying sky-high dues to an organization that is diametrically opposed to what I believe in, I have tempered my pro-labor stance somewhat. I can not stand the NEA. They protect terrible teachers, and are about very little other than maintaining the status quo. Sorry about the rant!
