There are three items currently in the news that when taken together led me to ponder the question in the header for this topic.

In NYC we have a gays-only school.

In Ohio there is an outcry because a white teacher is being assigned to teach black history.

And in the NFL the Detroit Lions have been fined $200K for failing to interview a minority candidate for head coach, even though they asked at least 5, all of whom declined.

It seems to me that there is far too much interference with the natural order of things. The more diverse we get, the more segregated we become.

What's up with that?

What are you talking about? That's an oxymoron. And do you have a question? Besides, the only thing there that has anything to do with segregation is an all-gay school.

Whenever people start talking about "the natural order of things" I get wary. The natural order of things has been used to justify a lot of very bad things. I don't accept segregation as part of the natural order.

Is there a specific question to debate? unsure.gif

Our society has been much more diversified in the past. We used to have isolated diverse communities scattered around the nations speaking dozens of languages. Communities had many more foreign language churches and newspapers than they do today. Until the 1920s or so, most urban neighborhoods were divided not by class (like today) but by ethnicity. We survived just fine despite the rise of the KKK (Harding had them in the White House, Oklahoma and Oregon had clan dominated state governments) in the 1910s and 1920s.

In short, don't worry the sky is not falling.

P51,

We do need a question to debate.

PM me or another mod or this thread will close.

An amendment to P51's original post, with a question for us to debate:

QUOTE
The various and sundry civil rights initiatives and protections have 'living in harmony' as their ultimate goal, correct? Or at the very least, no discrimination.

These three news items seem to fly in the face of that goal while supposedly promoting the programs.

Wouldn't we be better off spending our time and money prosecuting those who discriminate and let the natural order of things take care of the rest?
