Look for the Falcons with Vick to influence the playoff picture with possible upset wins over Carolina (Dec. 7) and Indianapolis (Dec. 14).
One out of two might not have been so bad if Indy hadn't just totally decimated the Falcons this week. I'm still amazed Vick didn't even register 100
total yards against Indianapolis. While they may have beaten the Titans
(whose own special teams really beat them), their defense did not appear to be as solid as yesterday's 38-7 might imply. While Michael Vick may have been unable to pull a repeat performance I'm still looking for Clinton Portis to expose their defense this week if he's healthy.
As for the rest of the
AFC, I think Tennessee could beat about any team but New England when Steve is healthy and the defense is playing to their ability. Of course, Steve isn't healthy and the defense seems to only buckle down when they have no other choice. They need to realize it benefits them to play tough from beginning to end.
Kansas City might win their first game in the playoffs but I expect that will be it. They aren't winning against tough teams and that's all they'll have to choose from in the post-season. They're a good team, but their defense isn't as improved from last season as it needs to be for a Super Bowl run.
Denver is a tough offensive team when they want to be, but their defense will lose the close games for them. Depending on how they playoffs are established they could go deep. The only teams I see stopping them are New England or the Titans
(rushing defense). I expect Clinton Portis can open doors to victory against Kansas City, Indianapolis, and either the Bengals or Ravens.
I think New England is the best and most balanced team. They're who I expect to see representing the AFC in the Super Bowl this year. I look for a close game between them and whoever they could play in the
AFC championship game
(presumably in Foxboro).

In the
NFC I feel Philadelphia is the best and most balanced team. If it does turn out to be them and the Pats, I may skip out on the Super Bowl this year. One good defense can be fun to watch, but two really good defenses is just sleep inducing...
Everyone I know is hyped about the Rams, but I don't see them making it with Bulger at QB. The guy makes too many mistakes
(see more INTs than TDs) and Marshall Faulk can be contained. Their defense also still needs work, as evidenced by Seattle and Cleveland in recent weeks. It was all they could do to escape with a win over
Tim Couch and a third string running back, and a referee had to bail them out this week.
Whether Green Bay or Minnesota, the
NFC North won't make it. Minnesota could lose it on defense while the Packers would lose it on either INTs from Favre or fumbles from Green. Neither team has the consistency or strength of character to pull it off.
Seattle can't win on the road and Dallas can't defeat balanced teams. Carolina is only going to be there because the rest of their division can't.
I kind of like
Hugo's prediction on the Super Bowl score, though I wouldn't be terribly surprised by something lower and considerably less spectacular.
