On the 'on-line' list at the bottom of the main page, amongst the member's name I have noticed 'Google [Spider]. Can anyone tell me what this means?
Google
Jaime
This is how Google gets webpages for people to search. Mike could describe this better than me, but I'll take a shot.

Google sends out their "spiders" looking for new and updated material. When they find some, they store it for searchable material in their search engine.

Because our material is frequently changing or being updated, Google likes to hang around A LOT. In fact, since August 7th of this year, Google has hit us 26065 times (and counting!). That "Google [spider]" that you see is them storing our material for searchable use.

I know I've said this before, but it can never hurt to stress too much - we often rank near the top for certain issues and debates at Google. Because of this, thousands of people have the potential to see your posts. The first impression you make on a stranger can stand for a lifetime. Proper spelling, grammar and punctuation will take you a long way as far as credibility goes. Also, if you are starting a new thread, it helps to make the title of it something like what people may search on in Google (assuming you want more than just our members to find it).

I hope that helps. If not, I'll let Mike know he should drop by this thread and elaborate. flowers.gif

Thanks Jaime. That's all I wanted to know smile.gif

So, Jaime, are you saying we should give our threads titles like "Hot Sex" and "Teenage Nymphos?" Now THAT would get some google results!! tongue.gif

A teacher once told me, concerning ethics, that one should act as though your actions will be tomorrow's news headlines. Likewise, if we are posting with the thought in mind that our posts will be read by millions of people... well then we don't want to sound like idiots! cool.gif
GoAmerica
So it's basically like a permanent cookie?
Jaime
No, goamerica. Not at all. Cookies enable the forum to remember your login, what new posts you've read and which you've not, if you have new PMs etc.

Spiders are more like an active guest but there is no actual person sitting at a computer visiting to the site. It is Google's programming that allows it to enter as if it were a guest, collect and store threads, and use them for later search use when people go to their search engine.

Does that help?

And quark - it all depends on the kind of traffic you want to come here, I suppose biggrin.gif

I think your teacher gave you sound advice...of course, there will always be some that would prefer to be heard than listened to. happy.gif

Sometimes I see the google spider PMing or emailing. What does this mean?

Yes it does. It's like the permanent bot that stays in the chatroom. Right?

Actually it does go away ( the spider )

It means the spider found its way to a link to PM or email a member. The spiders literally "crawl" our forum - meaning almost every link it finds, it will try and open and cache - even links it technically is not authorized to view it - like PMing and emailing (which is reserved for registered members only).

No again. The Debate Manager ('bot' from the chatroom) is controlled by us* and the Google spiders are run by Google. We can't make Google spider us. We can only try and maintain a dynamic website - which is the type of material Google seeks - and hope Google will want to visit us and visit us frequently. biggrin.gif

I'll try and drag Mike away from his forum updating (yes, that is still occuring)

*Mike can give you details, I'm real hazy on the abilities of the Debate Manager

But, this is a way members find this site?

What do they do, search useing keywords?
Jaime

But, this is a way members find this site?

What do they do, search useing keywords?

1) It is a way for people to find AD if they chose to utilize one of the search engines that spiders us.

2) Um, yeah, how else do you do a search? wink2.gif

If I misunderstood your questions, please let me know.
GoAmerica
That explains why it was easy for me to find certain topics on this site using Google!
Jaime
GoAmerica, well, everyone -

Here's a little gem Mike made for us that you may not have noticed: AD News & Search Page

You'll notice that you can search Google from that page or America's Debate and get Google results (click the appropriate circle below the search box).

Ain't Mike great? wub.gif
Jimbo
well, what kind of keywords do people type to search?
Mike
