There are three lyricists I think are the best.
3.
Bob DylanFrom
The Chimes of FreedomThrough the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder
That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze
Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder
Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind
Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind
An' the unpawned painter behind beyond his rightful time
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
2.
Paul SimonFrom
Can't Run But A winding river
Gets wound around a heart. pull it
Tighter and tighter
Until the muddy waters part
Down by the river bank
A blues band arrives
The music suffers
The music business thrives
And my favorite lyricist? Gotta be Bob Marley:
from
Slave DriverEv'ry time I hear the crack of the whip
My blood runs cold
I remember on the slave ship
How they brutalised our very souls
Today they say that we are free
Only to be chained in poverty
Good god, I think it's all illiteracy
It's only a machine that make money
From
One DropThey made the world so hard
Everyday we got to keep on fighting
Everyday the people are dying
From hunger and starvation, lamentation
But read it in Revelation
You'll find your redemption
And then you give us the teaching of His Majesty
For we no want no devil philosophy
From
Small AxeThese are the words of my master.
Keep on telling me
No weak heart shall prosper,
Oh, no they can't.
And whosoever diggeth a pit, Lord,
Shall fall in it, shall fall in it.
Whosoever diggeth a pit shall bury in it,
Shall bury in it.
If you are the big tree,
We are the small axe
Sharpened to cut you down,
Ready to cut you down.
From
Concrete JungleNo chains around my feet, but I'm not free
I know I am bound here in captivity
And I've never known happiness, and I've never known sweet caresses
Still, I be always laughing like a clown
Won't someone help me?
Cause, sweet life, I've, I've got to pick myself from off the ground, yeah
In this here concrete jungle,
I say, what do you got for me now?
Concrete jungle, oh, why won't you let me be now?
Of these three, Dylan is the most poetic probably. Simon is the most abstract and smoothest. What takes Bob Marley to the top is the raw poetry and truth. Combined with his prophetic and charged delivery, Marley's lyrics were like a jolt of electric revolution to popular music. What Dylan alluded to poetically, Marley stated with a blunt, yet wholly righteous, raw power.
I had to think about this question, though. High on my list are Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, and Jello Biafra.
