Why can't staff member vote??
Jaime
Sep 16 2003, 02:52 PM
Mike & I were asking that, too, Amlord. I mean, if Jubes wanted to poll the moderation of the forum, then I'd understand, but I don't see why we shouldn't have an opinion on the quality of the posts (well, I'm SURE we all do, we just can't share them here

)
So what's the deal, Jubes?

I haven't been here long enough and I'm still kind of feeling my way around. So please forgive my "newbie-ness". But what exactly do you mean by "doubt some posts"? Do you mean you distrust the poster, or do you mean you distrust the truthfulness of the facts in the post? Do you mean you think some of the posts are unintelligent and not well thought out? What exactly do you mean?

Because staff members might vote more to the " I like the posts " because they are STAFF

Why would you think that? I have no qualms making a constructive criticism about people's posts. Actually, one would think the staff would lean towards being more critical than anyone else.

I haven't looked at the results yet, but I'd imagine that there are not too many people who voted "I have respect for their topics but little (2)" or "No respect for the posts (1)".
Why would they stick around long enough to vote?
This would be similar to asking Republicans what they think of the president. OK, well maybe that's not the
best example, but you see my point.

Since I only have two thumbs (unlike GoAmerica) I give you two thumbs up.

Mostly for the same reason as Goamerica, and a few more like:
-We have feedback into how the site is designed and can make suggestions.
-I think the rules are fairly lax (maybe just the enforcement) but are obeyed enough to make it a pleasant place.
-The wide variety of people we have makes for interesting perspectives. We have everyone except convicts, which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing.
-The absence of topics like "Does size matter?" "Is <insert icon> the coolest?" and other trivial matters.

I respect AD greatly, the mods are friendly and resonable, and I have already personal contact with Mike and Jaime and they are both very friendly.
This site does a great deal for the American image, many people here in England stereotype American people with really ignorant and essentially offensive views.
This site is living proof of the diversity, intelligence and civility of the American people. It represents a hope that one day the European and the American people can come together to fight and overcome the global problems we face today.
EDIT: When I say personal contact, I mean email and msn.
I have not had sexual intercourse with either Jaime or Mike

AD is wonderful! Sure, there are stupid posts from time to time, but that can't be prevented nor should it be. How else are we to correct misconceptions, which surely imust be an important function of AD?

I agree. People have already voted, by either staying here or leaving. So I think that the results may be a little biased.

I have to confess to being much more of a lurker than contributor (I'm sure theres many of us out there..) but I've really enjoyed the diversity and approches to some of the issues. The way the forums are moderated has created some of the most lively but respectfull debates I've ever read.
I actually feel quite guilty in taking advantage of all the research and effort that goes into some of the posts.
A big thumbs up and a big thanks a AD!

America's Debate is one of my favorite, top-drawer forums. Sometimes the debates get a little heated and too personal...but that comes with the territory and is resolved in a timely and civil fashion by the outstanding STAFF.

I particularly like the fact that it is a place for respectful debate and that there are moderators there to ensure that it stays that way. There are so many interesting views here, and people say what they need to say without reverting to childish flames. Rock on.

The first option of course

The one thing that is truly great is that griefers rarely stick around. I'm sure everyone has broken the AD rules at some point (hey I did a few days ago and I hadn't even noticed!), and they are a great deterrant for people who are set in their ways and just want to hastle people who oppose them.
What we get is a community with people of all backgrounds, and a political rainbow of ideas. Being able to debate with people whose beliefs I cannot understand, yet have great respect for, is fantastic. Any other fourm I've joined I ended up leaving because I lost respect for those I debated with, there simply weren't any rules to block lacking arguments or abuse. Bravo AD for only letting the (mostly) sensible people play

I really like it here, but I have two questions (not criticisms):
1. What does it mean to "doubt some posts?"
2. Why can we not post a link to someone else's commentary and just let people discuss it?
Thanks,

There can be no thoughtful debate if people are just recycling the words of others. Then again, the site can't exactly endorse copyright infringement either. Regardless, this is not the place for this discussion. If you need clarification try reading the
Rules and
Survival Guide or feel free to PM any member of the staff.

This is by far the worst site I have ever been to ever. I don't know why I've stayed this long...I could list my complaints but I don't have the time, Geez, this site's bad.
Just thought that we could use a disgruntled poster to keep it fair and balanced

Honestly. I am young. I like political debate and despite my age I am a journeyman/boy of debate forums. I stumbled onto this forum. I have to honestly say it is the best run political forum site I have came across. In the other rooms anger and bickering usually take the forum hostage. The moderators are hands on here and very perceptive. I must say this site is well run. The only problem is I like to curse. I dont aim it in a derogatory manner at someone just put it into the context of my sentences. I dont think curing is looked at here in a positive light. Is it okay to curse as long as its not directed at anyone? I would understand the reason for not allowing it as it probably would snow ball but can I throw ina cuss word? Will I get a strike? I like to curse

Edited out profanity lookalikes.

This is the only forum I belong to anymore. All the other on-line forums I ever joined became big gossip filled messes. This one stays clean, has a great balance of opinions, and requires one to think before posting. I have nothing but respect for the people running this site and all the members I have come across, even the silly ones who don't agree with me
