Hey All,

I thought I'd throw this out there because I'm a huge blues fan and I know that a lot of people here are too. I watched The Blues last night which is a great series that started out as a Marty Scorsese Documentary and ended up a seven part fourteen hour series that PBS and KCET are carrying for the next week straight! IT started last night and they traced the Blues in the early 1920's and late 1930's back to Africa and then brought it back to where they started from. I was in heaven last night and I thought I was gonna die when they started playin "Pig Meat" and Louuis Collins. One of my favorite musicians of all time has to be Mississippi Joe Hurt.

Has anyone else been enjoying this?

I won't get to see it, but keep your eyes open for a friend of mine, Corey Harris. He told me he was going to be on the show. He's an excellent guy, married to a woman named Corey (heh), and he's an amazing blues musician to boot.

Yes, I did see it, and enjoyed it immensely - the Scorsese film, that is....and according to the reviewers, that was supposed to be the weakest of the series...unfortunately, I haven't been able to see the rest, because I work second shift, however, the DVD collection is on my christmas/hanukkah/ramadan/quansa wish list, so if anyone's interested in a gift exchange this year....(hint,hint,hint) biggrin.gif

I flipped over to "The Blues" when the Packers/Bears game began to drag, but I wasn't overwhelmed by what I saw.

The performances by Bonnie Raitt, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, etcetera---THAT was cool.

But the "reenactments" with actors portraying blues legends was kind of hokey and weak. I think that was supposed to remind us that these are feature film directors doing these segments and not documentary directors. Maybe so, but I've never been a fan of Wim Wenders.

I will try again tonight but so far I'm not impressed. I think I would have preferred if a Ken Burns or someone who really digs the blues had done this rather than some artsy-fartsy director slumming.

But anything that gets people interested in the blues is good. I just wish this presentation was stronger.

Nighttimer,
I agree, last night's wasn't much to hoot about, but Sunday's was AWESOME! Scorsese did a great job! I expect a lot more tonight. Just to clarify, I felt the reenactments were better than the modern day performances, especially since they played the actual audio overf them. Let me know tomorrow what you tink of tonight's presentation! thumbsup.gif
