Lets try to restate the issue in a format conducive to the Rules (sorry no fancy hyperlink)

One of the cornerstones of modern feminist thought is the search for equality within our society. Yet far more attention is paid to how a woman's sex limits her in society than is ever paid to how it benefits her. To head off one counter argument at the start, life is not a jewelers scale. You can't place all the crappy things that happened in your life on one side, and all the good things on the other and come out with some equation of how great your life has been. An injustice suffered does not mitigate or make up for a privilege bestowed or vice versa.

Women 30 years ago were pressured into a subservient role in society. Since then many though by no means all of the limitations placed upon them have been removed. Yet some of the glaring inequities that benefit them remain almost unchallenged.

To keep the subject narrow lets focus on one of the more egregious examples. Women are less likely to be charged when arrested and less likely to be convicted when charged with serious crimes, and when convicted are handed lighter sentences when comparing the same offense. Males commit the most crime, but females do commit crime as well. When they do juries are far more likely to be sympathetic to their mitigating circumstances, especially if the woman is white.

Isn't this is just another example of society infantilizing women? Forty years ago no one thought pretty little things in poodle skirts were REALLY capable of studying biology. Today lots of people still think pretty little things aren't REALLY capable of aggravated assault, or murder. The root message is the same, both rely on the underlying assumption that women aren't as capable as men. So if feminists and people generally interested in gender issues are REALLY for equality, shouldn't we be seeing national campaigns by NOW for tough sentencing for females found guilty? At least until they are able bring them into line with the average sentences handed down to men?

To the admins, not sure if this belongs in male or female issues, maybe thats b/c they're really all humanity issues. But anyways feel free to transfer it if that suits you.

What is the question? huh.gif

Sure I think women get the short end of the stick, there is no doubt of that! but I think its getting better... albeit rather slowly.

Here in Denmark women have a greater share of responsibility than ever before, but even though we've had 'equality' for close on a hudred years now, women still make less in the higher paid jobs.
Down here in the 'working class' though, one's gender is besides the point. Here, we are paid by our job desription rather than our sex.

And it has been noted in recent years that women have begun to make their presence felt in several traditionally male dominated jobs; farming, plumbing, engineering and so on.
Still, it has also been noted that women are less apparent in the high paid jobs of commerce.
