links appeared at the bottom of the page too?

I'm always reading the last post, then scrolling alllllllll the way back up to the top to go to "View New Posts".

Just thought I'd throw it out there after seeing how quickly Mike did that Search thing a coupla days ago. thumbsup.gif

No. It wouldn't make sense. keeping them on the top is fine
Platypus
Actually, it would make a lot of sense and is common practice. When you produce text that's longer than a single page, it's bad interface design to make the user go back up to the top to navigate.

I agree because many people scroll to the bottom to see whos online and in the longest post by members i have to scroll all the way up... just an idea money.gif alien.gif bye.gif cat.gif clover.gif giveup.gif police.gif

I'd love to see this too and asked for it a while back.

Hi Folks. smile.gif

I'm kind of addressing everyone at once here.

Regardless of whether or not this would be a good idea, my first concern is the implementation.

The search field on the homepage was a piece of cake. It was a matter of adding some simple HTML to the master template. It took less than 10 minutes.

This, however, is a different case.

I can easily move it to the bottom of each page for everyone. However, this isn't necessarily the best scenario. I think that most of the members are used to it being at the top.

I could also easily add it to the bottom of every page. This isn't a good option either because the member-specific navigation is just that -- member specific. This option would make those links visible to guests, which is certain to be a headache causer.

So, how about simply adding it at the bottom for members only, you ask? Well, that would have to be hacked into the code, I believe. It wouldn't be a case of adding html like the past two options. Permissions would have to be checked for that navigation to appear, and to be quite honest, I don't think I have the ability to hack that into the forum right now.

There is actually a simple solution for this one. Take a look down at the bottom right corner of this post. You will see this image:

user posted image

Give it a click... it takes you back to the top of the page... thumbsup.gif

Also, the "Home" key on your keyboard does the same thing. smile.gif

I can see a point in Plat's post. Our software already does this to a certain extent. When it comes to page span links (i.e. 1,2,3...10), they are listed at the top and bottom. New topic and add reply are also at the top and bottom.

The only navigation that comes to mind that is missing beside the ones already mentioned are the breadcrumb links (i.e. America's Debate -> Comments & Suggestions ->Links on bottom of page).

While I can't necessarily duplicate them immediately, I can make it easier to get back to the top.

And that brings me to Jube's post-- an easy way back to the top on the forum index would be a good idea (although I'm still trying to figure out how all these emoticons are connected: money.gif alien.gif bye.gif cat.gif clover.gif giveup.gif police.gif ...anyone? huh.gif ) . I'll see if there's a nice little place to put one of these (user posted image) in there somewhere.

So, since I can't easily add it to the bottom right now, I can at least make it easier to get to the top on non-post view pages.

Edit: The "To the top" link can now be found on the default (red & blue) skin at the bottom right corner of the page, next to Delete cookies set by this board · Mark all posts as read.

Questions? huh.gif

Heck, I'm happy with the blue arrow.

And a little embarassed that I didn't know about the home key.

I'm fine now. Pay no attention to the Junior Contributor whistling.gif

Seriously, though, thanks for giving this so much thought. You guys do an awesome job.
