SOLAR EXPLOSIONS: Solar activity is high. An intense X5-class solar flare erupted today (Oct. 23rd at 8:35 UT) from sunspot 486 near the sun's southeastern limb. The explosion hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. Although the CME was not Earth-directed, it could deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field as early as Oct 24th (although the 25th is more likely).

Another CME was already en route when this morning's explosion occured. Pictured right, it was launched on Oct 22nd by an explosion near sunspot 484. Forecasters expect it to arrive on Oct. 24th and possibly trigger a strong geomagnetic storm.

All i can say is WOW!

It's affect on our daily lives could be very costly. It could damage sattilite communications (TV, pagers, cell phone) and electrical grids.

The last time something like this happened, it did a $200 million job on AT&T Telstar 401 satellite that experienced a massive power failure in 1997 only days after a solar storm arrived at Earth. Among networks affected were ABC, Fox and PBS, which used the satellite to beam programming to affiliate stations. The satellite also carried pager service, which was knocked out to 45 million people.

Neat tongue.gif

I like big explosions in space, like when the comet slammed into Jupiter a couple of years back. Im not a friend to mobile phones, nor do I have satellite TV. Or more to the point I don't really watch TV. Still its amazing how much goes on around about us, and there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop it. Meteor near misses, meteors actually hitting us, uber volcanoes threatening to shake the earth and block the sun for a few years. Actually I think Ill stop thinking about that ermm.gif

The sun obviously poses an imminent threat. We need to take the Bush doctrine farther, I've realized. We need to take out the sun before it conducts any more terrorist attacks. For that matter, we need to make an all-out assault on nature itself. Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Nature is obviously on the side of the terrorists. Thankfully, Bush realized this long ago and is hard at work on our "War on Nature."

Holy Cow!!!!!!!

Has anyone contacted King George II and Rumsfield. How dare the sun wreck havoc on his royal empire.

I believe we better tell CHICKEN LITTLE,too. w00t.gif

Oh come on, guys. This is getting ridiculous. We all know this was caused by the liberal media because it's a slow news week. When their satellites go out they can claim the Bush Administration was censoring them. This is all an attempt by the liberal media to keep us confused so their parent company can hock their wares and make us all feel better for a few fleeting moments. devil.gif

Thanks Jaime:

I love your idea better than mine. No one can say you don't have a good sense of humor. In fact that is needed, like a breath of fresh air. flowers.gif

I have been doing research on this latest "terrorist attack" as you crazy people have come to call it tongue.gif

There is a 90% chance that we will experience M Class flares, which are minor and may cause a brief radio blackout in the polar regions of Earth. Also, the radiation storm that follows will also be minor.

The chances of power grids being effected are 50% as well as cell phones and pagers. My dad, who is hassled be his cell phone all day non-stop is hoping the cell phones will blink out. laugh.gif

Locally, our news station has not been covering this event very closely. online2long.gif The closest they have come to mentioning any of this, is when the weatherman on Wednesday night's 11:00 news report said:

If you take a close look at  this Weather Cam shot from just before sunset, it almost looks as though the sun is on fire.

The news that the sun is not only on fire, but may have undergone a series of explosions, should obviously be of grave concern. ermm.gif

Has President Bush identified Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein as the person devil.gif responsible?

Is this perhaps the evidence GWB has been seeking that North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon; choosing the sun as a test site, with the malicious ph34r.gif intent of disrupting all of America's communication systems?

Republican detective.gif minds want to know...

Jaime, really!

What we all know, is that this was caused by slightly conservative female libertarians (who really run the country), to get all us males off the couch this weekend (when the TVs quit working) and out raking leaves and such. whistling.gif

It's a conspiracy, I tell ya! wink2.gif

Does this mean I won't be able to listen to Radio Free Antarctica? Dang.

Maybe Bin Laden and Saddam have built a hidey-hole on the surface of the sun, and Osama is getting Allah to fling firebolts at the infidels' cell phones! I'll bet if our forces occupied the sun there would be fewer of these "flare-ups." Or would there be even more..........?

I can ensure to you all that we French have nothing do with this threat! biggrin.gif

Beware that Jacques Chirac could veto a resolution against the sun though! tongue.gif
Robin_Scotland
Is that because there may be French weapons on the sun? whistling.gif

You guys got it all wrong,

Its the top secret Soviet poppyyov project, launched by the incredibly advanced soviet underground against the overconnected western world. for we all know that the soviets are the only ones to get to the moon... so they must be able to make the sun attack us by using top secret ymvvvyl tesla solar flare weapons.

bow before the russian threat.....

edited to add:
if you dont believe me that the russians are so advanced, read almost any Engineer Kimov post, he puts forth evidence in this arguments favor constantly

I just had a theory: It was the Chinese!! ph34r.gif

They launched a shuttle for the firest time. Is it any conincidence that this coinsides with their launch? shifty.gif shifty.gif

goamerica,

This administration needs a credible threat by a country where they can begin a propaganda campaign, begin a war, and declare victory within the next twelve months, so that our acting President can have a favorable rating in the polls going into the November 2004 election. I suspect that China is a bit more formidable than that as an enemy. We need to propose an enemy that George would feel that we could really handle in that time frame.

Should we blame this on the Vatican? The Pope rules an ancient empire with cells spread throughout the civilized world. Who knows how many people he could have asked to pray for this event to happen. He is a world leader who claims to speak to God on a regular basis, and whose followers are not considered crazy for believing that he does...

Then again, the President is just returning from Hawaii... Could someone have launched something from there while the world's attention was focused on the President?

Thanks for the heads-up, goamerica. If I experience a surge in energy, I'll know to what it may be attributable.

Did you know that solar activity and the resultant radiation will affect us two generations from now? Radiation affects a woman's ovaries. Any radiation that my grandmother experienced before my mother was born actually affected me.

That darn sun! Can't live with it, can't live without it! rolleyes.gif

Of course, there's no reason to be uptight about it, since there's no way to avoid it.

There's a time and a place for a one-liner and this seems like the right time and place.

This is Bill Clinton's fault. wacko.gif
