pot smoking and driving accounting for road fatalities?

Yes, so says the commercials running on MTV recently. Whilst channel surfing the other night, my spouse and I stopped dead in our surfage upon seeing a commercial stating that driving while under the influence of weed accounted for ???(dont recall the #) of road fatalities.

Not having watched MTV for a long time, is this something new? I do remember "your brain on drugs" commercials which seemed to target the users of hard narcotics but never marijuana. This is the very first time I have ever seen "marijuana as cause for roadside death" messages on TV. we were kind of surprised.

have any of you seen otherwise? and is this new information on driving under the influence of weed or have I just not been paying attention? blink.gif

That's almost as surprising as finding a music video on MTV!

are you mocking me?

seriously, have these commercials been on forever or not?

I don't believe those commercials are paid for by MTV are they? They sound like those AdCounsel PSAs that run on most channels. My guess is that they frequent MTV's airtime because of the audience (doesn't do much good to run them during All My Children or Barney & Friends wink.gif )

And no, this is not new info. These are highly distorted 'facts' in order to prove a pathetically losing point. The commercials fail to make any connection that marijuana actually causes the accidents - just that it so happens to be in some people's systems at the time of the accident. Heck, those commercials don't even say if the person with pot in their system was the cause of or the victim in the accident. Completely vague.

I betcha if you tested them to see if they've eaten fatty foods in the last month, that test would come up positive too. Doesn't mean eating Mickey D's causes accidents. rolleyes.gif

These commercials remind me of the Reefer Madness propaganda that was spewed in the 1920's & 30's. It's a load of lies. When our government is willing to lie to us, we start to lose trust. This is a very poor public relations move. Most people can see right through the bull.

I'm not mocking you. MTV plays an occasional rap/hip-hop/stupid music video every so often just to make a weak attempt at staying a music video channel.

I have seen the weed PSA's but I don't remember where. I think I was surfing, too.
