The following took place in the "world's smallest political quiz" thread:

QUOTE(campbejm(edited for format))
I can't say "yes" to things like repealing drug laws, when we can see its failure in Europe

QUOTE(Wertz)
...I feel compelled to respond. tongue.gif The repeal of drug laws in Europe has not, in fact, been a failure. This has come up in debate here before and sources have been provided debunking this common (among some) myth.

I couldn't find where this had been debated before. The topic is of tremendous interest to me, but I have done no research as yet.

So I was hoping I could entice campbejm and Wertz, and others, to go at it here...

Question: have drug law liberalisation efforts in other countries been successful, or have they been failures? Why?

Mod Note: Moved from Domestic Policy to International Debate because question is regarding domestic policy of other nations outside the U.S.

Please carry on. Good debate question, btw - I think it's an original - how hard it that to come by here?!? biggrin.gif

I would say definitely a success, here are some statistics.

Amphetamine usage

marijuana usage

Ecstacy usage

Opium based substances

Cocaine usage

according to these numbers I would think the Netherlands are doing great.

Wow. Looks like this one's settled. Case closed. By those statistics it is clear that the end of prohibition is the Netherlands has been a resounding success. Yet, I wonder if anyone has a different view or conflicting source of information...
